7.0 TEST PROCEDURE :

Vertical Initial Pile load test ( Compression) was done as per IS: 2911 (Part-4)-2013 in
which compression load was applied to Pile top ( after preparation of pile top) by means of a
hydraulic jack against rolled steel Joist capable of providing reaction . Settlement was
recorded by four dial gauges of 0.01 mm sensitivity each positioned at equal distance
around the pile and held by datum bars resting on immovable supports at a minimum
distance of 3D or 2.00 m whichever is more from the edge of the pile. The reactions for the
jack was obtained from a kentledge placed on a platform supported clear of the test pile. The
center of gravity of the Kentledge was tried to be kept on the axis of the pile and the load
applied by the Jack was also made co-axial with this pile.

8.0 Preparation of Pile Head :

The pile head was chipped off to natural horizontal plane till sound concrete met. The
projecting reinforcement was cut-off or bent suitably and the top finished smooth and level
with cement plaster or similar synthetic material where required. A Distancepiece with a
mark at centre was placed on the head of test pile for the jack to rest.

9.0 Erection of Assembly :

Hydraulic jacks, Hydraulic Pump, datum bar, ISMB and horizontal channel were assembled
as shown in methodology.

10.0 Load Application [Cl. 7.1.2 of IS 2911 (IV) 2013]

The test was carried out by applying series of vertical downward incremental load by means
of hydraulic jacks. Each increment being of about 20 % of safe load on pile.

11.0 Settlement [Cl. 7.1.4 of IS 2911 (IV) 2013]

Settlements readings were recorded with 4 dial gauges of 0.01 mm sensitivity held by
magnetic base. The dial gauges were placed symmetrically and at equal distances from the
pile. The dial gauges were held by magnetic base supported by datum bar resting on
immovable support.

In case of initial load test:

1) Applied load reaches 2.5 times the safe estimated load; or
2) Maximum settlement of pile exceeds a value of 10 percent of pile
diameter in case of uniform diameter piles and
7.5 percent of bulb diameter in case of under-reamed piles.

12.0 Load Increment Criteria [Cl. 7.2.1 of IS 2911 (IV) 2013]

Settlement readings were noted on each dial gauge immediately after loading and
after every 30 minutes for each stage. Next loading increment was applied after satisfying
following criteria:

a) 0.2 mm or less in first hour

b) Or 2 hour whichever occur first.

13.0 Duration of Vertical Loading [Cl. 7.1.5 of IS 2911 (IV) 2013]

The safe vertical load on single pile for the initial test should be least of the following:
a) For piles up to and including 600 mm diameter:
1) Two-thirds of the final load at which the total displacement attains a value
of 12 mm unless otherwise required in a given case on the basis of nature and
type of structure in which case, the safe load should be corresponding to the
stated total displacement permissible; and
2) Fifty percent of the final load at which the total displacement equal to 10
percent of the pile diameter in case of uniform diameter piles and 7.5 percent
of bulb diameter in case of under-reamed piles.
b) For piles more than 600 mm diameter:
1) Two-thirds of the final load at which the total displacement attains a value
of 18 mm or maximum of 2 percent pile diameter whichever is less
unless otherwise required in a given case on the basis of nature and type of
structure in which case, the safe load should be corresponding to the
stated total displacement permissible; and
2)50 percent of the final load at which the total displacement equal to 10
percent of the pile diameter in case of uniform diameter piles and 7.5 percent
of bulb diameter in case of under-reamed piles.
14.0 Maintained load [Cl. 7.2 of IS 2911 (IV) 2013] :

In this method, each stage of loading shall be maintained till the rate of movement of the
pile top is not more than 0.2 mm/h or until 2 h have elapsed, whichever is earlier subject
to a minimum of 1 h. The maximum test load shall be maintained for 24 h.

15.0 APPLICATION OF LOAD :

Design Load = 31.00 MT

Load to be applied on the pile top =31.00 MT x 2.5 = 77.50 MT

Load increment = 20% of design load = 6.20 MT

The test was carried out by applying a series of vertical downward incremental load of 6.00
Tone. The final load applied was 80.00 Tone.

16.0 INTERPRETATION OF THE TEST DATA :

After completion of the test, the load Vs settlement curve was plotted.

From the initial Pile Load test conducted at site, the following settlements were observed.

Initial Settlement = 0.00 mm.

Gross settlements = (7.00 -0.00) = 7.00 mm at 80.00 MT load,

Net settlement is (4.60 -0.00) = 4.60 mm.

Rebound = (7.00 -4.60) = 2.40 mm.

17.0 LOAD VS Settlement CURVE :

The Load Vs Settlement curve is plotted based on the above data.

From the Load Vs Settlement curve it is observed that for an applied load of
80.00 MT, settlement reached is 7.00 mm

18. CONCLUSION :

The safe vertical load on single pile for the initial test should be least of the
following:

c) For piles up to and including 600 mm diameter:

1) Two-thirds of the final load at which the total displacement attains a
value of 12 mm unless otherwise required in a given case on the basis
of nature and type of structure in which case, the safe load should be
corresponding to the stated total displacement permissible; and

2) Fifty percent of the final load at which the total displacement equal to
10 percent of the pile diameter in case of uniform diameter piles and
7.5 percent of bulb diameter in case of under-reamed piles.
d) For piles more than 600 mm diameter:

1) Two-thirds of the final load at which the total displacement attains a

value of 18 mm or maximum of 2 percent pile diameter whichever
is less unless otherwise required in a given case on the basis of
nature and type of structure in which case, the safe load should be
corresponding to the stated total displacement permissible; and

2) 50 percent of the final load at which the total displacement equal to

10 percent of the pile diameter in case of uniform diameter piles and
7.5 percent of bulb diameter in case of under-reamed piles.
From the graph it is found that

a. Load corresponding to 12mm settlement = 103.00Ton

Safe load = (2/3 x 103.00) ton = 68.67Ton

b. 10 % of Pile dia = 10 % of 450 mm = 45 mm

Settlement of pile does not reach a value of 45 mm so consideration of clause
(b) for safe load doesn’t arise.

So, (2/3 x 103.00) ton = 68.67Ton 31.00MT, Hence Safe.

So the design load of 31.00MT is safe.

METHODOLOGY OF INITIAL VERTICAL PILE LOAD TEST

WORK PROCEDURE FOR INITIAL (VERTICAL) LOAD TEST OF PILES:

1.) The selected pile by Engineer in Charge for Initial Vertical pile and hence sets load was two and
half time as per clause 29, IS 2911 (Part-4) for Kentledge for availability of reaction as per IS 2911.
(Part IV) 2013.

2.) The Pile head was chipped off to natural horizontal plane approximately at cut-off level.
Projecting reinforcement were cut or bent suitable to the level. The ground level around pile was
lowered by approx. 0.60m. Covering working area required for test activities Top of pile was finished
smooth with plaster of paris or any other suitable material. Bearing plate was 25 mm thick and
placed on pile head for jack no CSL.

3) Load were applied by 100 Ton capacity Hydraulic Screw jack with pressure gauges against
kantiledge of 100 MT including supporting beam decking etc. The Platform was provide loading area
of size 6 m x 6 m. The main beam ISMB 300 @ 6m x 2nos , secondary beam ISMB 300@6m x5 nos
and channel 100MMx50@6M x 30nos were supported on sand bags.

4.) Calculation of weight of total ISMB

ISMB 300 (main beam) @ 2 Nos x 6.00m @56.00kg/m = 672.00kg

ISMB 300 (Secondary beam) @ 5 Nos x 6.00m @56.00kg/m = 1680.00kg

channel 100MMx50@6M x 30nos =10 kg/m x6X30 nos. = 1800.00kg

Hence, total weight 4152.60 kg ≈ 4.152MT

5.) Calculation of required sand bags and volume (Approx)

Here, design load=31MT, so, Required Load = (31X2.5X1.20)=93.00 MT

If one bag sand=25 kg

Then, bags required for loading =(93000-4152.6)kg=88847.40Kg/25=3553 bags, If we consider the

density of sand as 1800kg/m3

Total required volume of sand for loading

88847.40Kg /1700kg/m3
88847.40Kg
= = 49.36 m3
1800kg/m3

6.) Calculation of height of the platform

Given Area is 5.40x5.40m = 29.16 m2

Height = 49.36m3/29.16 m2 =1.70m
