Course Outline
• Corporate finance broadly studies the finance of
corporations, with the three main pillars consisting in
investment decisions, financing decisions and dividend
policy, all serving the goal of maximizing shareholder
value.

• Serving as a foundation for more advanced studies, this


introductory course is designed for first-year students with
the aim to demystify the principles of corporate finance,
offer students a comprehensive view of finance at the
entry level and familiarize the students with the concepts
and ideas that are essential for subsequent studies in
Finance.

Learning Objectives
• Understand the foundations and principles of
corporate finance.

• Work with financial information.

• Understand the time value of money.

• Study and solve basic capital budgeting problems.

• Problem solving techniques using Excel

• Lecture slides and End-of-Chapter questions
• PPT slides and chapter questions are uploaded on “Courses.”
• End-of-Chapter solutions will be provided in Excel.
• Quizzes and exams are mainly referenced from the PPT slides
and End-of-Chapter questions.

• Ross, Westerfield, and Jordan, Essentials of Corporate


Finance, 11th Edition, McGraw-Hill.
• Available on McGraw-Hill Connect
• Students should register McGraw-Hill Connect by themselves
at the beginning of the semester.
• Make sure to use the same (full) name as registered on
Courses when you sign up for Connect.
• Guide to registration and installation of proctorio(a proctoring
program of your online quizzes and exams) are on “Courses.”

Continuous Assessment:
Quizzes + Asynchronous
• Eight online quizzes via Connect after each chapter +
one excel tutorial (Asynchronous) will make up your
continuous assessment grade.

Quizzes
• You have only one attempt to take a quiz, but there is no
time limit once you start the quiz.
• There are around 10-15 questions per each quiz.
• All quizzes will be open-book.
• You may use Excel.
• The first four quizzes are due on 29th Feb. The last four
quizzes are due on 30th Apr.
• The one lowest quiz score will NOT be counted.

Continuous Assessment:
Quizzes + Asynchronous
Asynchronous Session (week 2)
• An asynchronous will be given via Connect as well. You should
complete the excel tutorials on Connect for your asynchronous
session. It will be counted as one quiz grade.

Grade example
• A student gets 7, 8, 8, 9, 9, 9, 10, 10 (quizzes) and 9
(asynchronous), then the continuous assessment score is
(8+8+9+9+9+10+10: the lowest score 7 is
excluded)+9:asynch)/8 = 9/10, which gives the final score of
18/20.

Midterm/Final Exam
• The midterm and final exams will be held on McGraw-Hill
Connect.
• The date and places will be organized by the exam
center and be notified later.
• Even though it is an online exam via McGraw-Hill
Connect, you should be onsite campus to take the exam
and will be proctored by the exam center staff.
• The exam is open-book. However, the online and web
access is prohibited during the exam.
• All the course materials (PPTs, End-of-Chapter questions)
are allowed during the exam.
• You may use Excel.

Midterm/Final Exam
• The final exam is a comprehensive one covering all the
chapters.
• The exams will cover materials from lectures, quizzes,
and the textbook.
• Mock exams will be provided via McGraw-Hill Connect for
you to prepare for the exam.
• Proctorio via McGrawHill must be installed to monitor
your online quizzes and exams and to prevent from
getting access to online and web materials.
• You may bring and use your calculator, any convenient
type for you (financial / engineering / or a simple one).
