2: Course Project: Align Math Concepts and/or Skills with Standards According to the 21st Century Skills Problem Solving, Real-World Applications and Technology (Theme 3, 2011), Module 2: The Standards and Beyond of EDU518: Instructional Methods for Secondary Mathematics: We are no longer satisfied with rote learning in the three Rs. Critical 21st century skills include critical thinking, communication, collaboration, creativity, and the ability to use various technologies, locate information, and analyze data. Certainly, a key skill is learning to learn (para. 3). Schools now need to be re-thought and re-engineered to serve the students of this centuryin the knowledge revolution as part of a global economy. We must leverage technology and the vast amount of available research on how children learn (para. 2). Concept or Skill Represent and interpret data: What can you learn by collecting data? What can the shape of data in a display tell you?

enhance critical thinking skills. 21st Century Skills: Engage the students Most students love working on the computer which is a plus. Assignments will include software programs of: www.studyisland.com www.educationcity.com Visions software (smaller version of smart board technology to be used) Clickers in classroom. Students love working on pcs.

Reading charts X and Y axis Understand and be able to identify data in different types of charts such as plot and bar graphs. Calculate problems related to the charts.

Incorporate problem-solving
Instruction and questions will include calculation of distances/time as well as half hour and/or fourth hour. Tasks will be partnerships, small group, and whole group. Mathematical vocabulary New chart terminology will be incorporated in the instructions/questions.

Connections to the real world

One plotting chart will included analyzing data from the 5 different 4th grade classrooms with their teachers name included, i.e. number of boys/girls in each class.

Many of these tasks will be modeled by teacher with return demonstration.
