AN OPEN LETTER TO INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
Adapt.
We come from different countries,
cultures, races, etc., and we encounter
massive changes in every aspect of
life, whether food, language, or
weather. During my term, I observed
that students' expectations were a lot
different from reality. I had most of my
classmates from my home country
India. The education system is very
different from what I witnessed in
Canada. The same is the case for
other countries as well. What can we
do in this situation? Instead of
cribbing, acknowledge the problems,
take control of the situation, and try to

find a solution.
I am glad to have this opportunity to share my insights
as a Project Management student at Lambton College.
The journey of any international student takes work. Still,
it is worth the effort when put in the right direction. We
encounter many challenges on this journey, and today I
will talk about a few of them.
Use the Resources.
I was not the kind of person who would proactively seek
information. But as I entered the professional world, I
understood that if I sit and wait for information to come
to me, that will not happen. I will have to put myself out
there, seek information and opportunities, and use it for
my success and growth. This is something that has
helped me sail through my college term. There is a pool
of resources like LinkedIn learning, PMI membership,
Grammarly, volunteering opportunities, and free
workshops and events. Be on top of everything and use it
to your advantage because you will not have it once you
graduate.

Everyone has a different story.
Always remember everyone is at a
different stage of their life. You might
be a fresher straight out of college, or
you might have a few years of
experience, or you might be someone
with a lot of experience. Don't get
overwhelmed or intimidated by others;
always remember that every person
has their own challenge they must
overcome. Set your own goals and
priorities, have a plan, and put your
one hundred percent into achieving
that. If you are content, you are
successful!

Ask for Help!
The college provides a safe environment to be yourself,
make mistakes, and learn. You might struggle with
personal issues, homesickness, meeting timelines,
learning new tools, etc. Just be open for a conversation,
it can be anyone, your classmate, professor, or a friend,
and you can also use the mental health support the
college provides. One key thing I have learned is to "raise
your hand" whenever you need help. As Albus
Dumbledore puts it, "Help will always be given to those
who ask." Unsurprisingly, Dumbledore is right here.
