I feel proud to present my Micro project in Hydraulics on the
topic “Determination of discharge of rectangular notch by
Chezy’s Equation.”
This Report wouldn’t have been feasible without the proper
and rigorous guidance of Mr. S.M.Khan who guided me throughout
this project in every possible way an investigatory Report involves
various difficult lab experiment which have to be carried out by the
me to obtain the observation and conclude the report on a meaningful
note. I would like to thank both Mr. S.M.Khan and Principle Dr. S.D
Mahajan for guiding me on a step by step basis and ensuring that I
completed all my experiment with ease.
Rigorous hard work has been put in this project to ensure that it
proves to be the best. I hope that this project will prove to be a
breeding ground for the next generation of student and will guide
them in every possible manner.

Abstract

The Chezy’s formula was given by the French hydrologist

Antonie Chezy. He related the discharge (Q) of the water flowing
through an open channel with the respective channel dimensions and
slope of the bed.

The Chezy's formula for determination of discharge of water in

open channels and methods to determine the Chezy's constant.

5
Introduction

 Chezy’s Formula for Open Channel Flow

For a steady uniform flow of liquid through an open channel, the rate
of flow of fluid or the discharge is given by the formula:

This equation is called as Chezy’s Formula. Where, A is the area of

flow of water, m is the hydraulic mean depth or hydraulic radius, ‘i' is
the slope of the bed and ‘C’ is the Chezy’s Constant.

In the above equation, the velocity is given by,

If ‘P’ is the wetter perimeter of the cross-section, then hydraulic mean

depth or hydraulic radius is given by the formula, m = A/P;

The chezy formula is directly related to the:

 Frictional Coefficient (F) Ganguillet -Kutter Formula

 Manning’s Formula
 Bazin Formula

This formula is developed in MKS units. The Basin formula is given

by:

6
K = Bazin’s Constant; m = Hydraulic mean depth or hydraulic radius

The bazin’s constant is dependent on the roughness of the channel

surface. More the roughness of the surface, higher is the value of
Bazin’s Constant.

2. Ganguillet -Kutter Formula

This formula is developed in MKS units as

From the above equation, the roughness coefficient is given by ‘N’

which is called as Kutter’s Constant. The value of Kutter’s constant is
also dependent on the roughness of the surface.

The slope of the bed is given by ‘i’ and the hydraulic mean depth or
hydraulic radius is given by ‘m’.

3. Manning’s Formula
The Manning’s formula is given by:

7
Where ‘m’ is the hydraulic mean depth or hydraulic radius; ‘N’ is
called as the Manning’s constant. For a normal range of slope and
hydraulic depth, the value of manning’s constant and the Kutter's
formula remains the same.

 Determination of discharge of rectangular notch by Chezy’s
Equation.
Figure shows sharp edge-notch. Let the free discharge over it take
place under a constant head H. Let the notch be suppressed one (i.e.
L=B) and let the velocity approach be neglected.
Let there be only span of notch of length L meters. Let us find a basic
formula for the discharge passing over this notch under the above
conditions.

Let usconsider a narrow strip of the notch such that the top of strip is
‘h’ meter below the free surface of liquid and the bottom of strip is
(h+δh) meter below the free surface, i.e. the free strip as δh meters
long. Since h>h1, the strip will act as small orifice and hence,

To get the total quantity of water flowing through the rectangular

notch, integrated between the limits 0 and H.

9
10
Conclusion
As a conclusion we can said that we can determine the discharge of
rectangular notch by Chezy’s equation.
