SCENE 1:IN A LONGHOUSE COMMON AREA

Sound: Rainforest
Music: Sadaborneo (start from 0:15)
Props: Door, Baskets, Leaves for weaving, Mugs, Tikar

On the right, MIT, UMANG and KUNII are sitting on a tikar and weaving. On the left,
RAWING, BERUWIN and MUNAN are sitting on the floor, drinking from their mugs.
Soon, SIMALUNGN and JELINAH pass by, chatting heartily and enjoying each other’s
company.
KUNII : Aww……how romantic!
KUNII & UMANG : (sigh & look dreamily at the couple)
MIT : (tries to snap KUNII and UMANG out of their daze) Hey!
Snap out of it, girls!
UMANG : (giggles & sighs) Jelinah is so lucky. If I had such a strong,
caring -
KUNII : (dreamily)-handsome-
UMANG : - man, I would never stop talking about him.
KUNII : Me too. Plus, isn’t it remarkable how he has never been
defeated, ever? (dreamily) So manly…
UMANG : He truly is! Oh, how I wish he’s mine. I’m willing to offer the
water spirit anything to make Simalungun mine.
MIT : Shh! Keep your voice down or they’ll hear you!
KUNNI and UMANG giggle and the three women continue weaving, chatting and
giggling. Their voices fade into the background.

Focus is now on RAWING, BERUWIN and MUNAN.
RAWING : (jealous) Hmmph! Can never be defeated?! What a bunch of
rubbish!
BERUWIN : But it’s true. He has never been defeated, ever.
RAWING : (cockily) Rubbish! He’s human, right? How can he not be
defeated?
MUNAN : (dramatically, sleazily) Well, I heard rumours. Rumours that he
has extraordinary powers that none of us possess. And it is this
power that gives him unbreakable skin. Muahahahah (evil
laugh)
BERUWIN : (hits MUNAN)
MUNAN : (lamely) Ahhh… (collapses face first on the ground)
BERUWIN : Cut it out, man. Since when do you speak like that?
MUNAN : (gets up) (speak normally) But it’s true. These are the rumours
I heard.
TUAI RUMAH comes into the common area from a door towards RAWING, BERUWIN
and MUNAN. Nods politely and amicably to them and sits down.
TUAI RUMAH : Hello, hello. It’s my pleasure to meet you all.
RAWING, : (messily) Hi. Thank you, thank you. Pleasure is ours.
BERUWIN &
MUNAN
TUAI RUMAH : So, you’re the famous Rawing! I’ve heard so much about you!
RAWING : (surprised) You have?
TUAI RUMAH : Of course, of course! Your fighting skills are well-known in
our land! Of course, there’s Simalungun, but you hold your
own pretty well too!
RAWING : (smirks lopsidedly and cockily) Oh, that’s really good to hear.
TUAI RUMAH : Yeah! Anyway, Rawing. We are happy to host the spearing
festival next week. You against Simalungun, two of the best
fighters in Borneo. It should be a duel of the century!
SCENE 2: SPEARING FESTIVAL

Sound: Noisy arena, rainforest

Music: Sadrabation (start at 0:08)
Props: Spears, Chairs

On a field near SIMALUNGUN’s longhouse, the spearing festival is going on. On the
right, JELINAH is massaging SIMALUNGUN’s shoulders and he is sharpening his spear.
SIMALUNGUN is sitting on a stool.

On the left, MUNAN is massaging RAWING’s shoulders and BERUWIN is watching.

RAWING is sitting on a stool.

All around, villagers are gathered about, chatting excitedly. TUAI RUMAH is among
them.
JELINAH : Be careful, my dear!
SIMALUNGUN : Don’t worry, my love. I’m undefeatable!
JELINAH and SIMALUNGUN’s voices fade into the background. Focus now turns to
RAWING, BERUWIN and MUNAN.

MUNAN : Now, remember, sir. Don’t be nervous.
RAWING : (annoyed)I’m NOT nervous!
BERUWIN : Munan, shut up. Don’t worry, Rawing. You’ve trained long and
hard for months. You’ll win this duel.
RAWING : I know. I better. (increasing confidence) And then I’ll be the
STRONGEST warrior in this land.
BERUWIN : That’s the spirit!
TUAI RUMAH moves to the centre.
TUAI RUMAH : Warriors, on your mark!
RAWING and SIMALUNGUN move to the centre with their weapons. They face off each
other.
TUAI RUMAH : On my left is Rawing of Rumah Panjang Pali.
Polite cheers and claps from the crowd.
TUAI RUMAH : And on my right is Simalungun of Rumah Batang Lupar!
Loud and excited cheers from the crowd.
UMANG : Simalungun, I LOVE YOU! (MIT hits UMANG, the crowd,
SIMALUNGUN and JELINAH laugh)
TUAI RUMAH : Ladies and gentlemen. Our spearing duel begins…NOW!
Music: Cinematic tribal drums background music
Sound: -

SIMALUNGUN and RAWING spar with each other fiercely. They yell and scream. Both
are highly skilled.

SIMALUNGUN is strong and attacks ferociously. RAWING, while not as strong, is agile.

Eventually, the sparring ends with RAWING lying on the ground with SIMALUNGUN’s
spear inches from his neck.

The crowd cheers.

SIMALUNGUN retract his spear and offers a hand to RAWING, who takes it with a sour
face reluctantly and gets up. RAWING walks back to the left to join BERUWIN and
MUNAN.

TUAI RUMAH approaches the centre, hold up SIMALUNGUN’s arm and declares him as
winner.
TUAI RUMAH : Ladies and gentlemen. I present to you, the MIGHTIEST
WARRIOR of Borneo! (crowd cheers feverishly) (JELINAH
puts her hands to her chest in relief and looks happy)
The crowd’s voices slowly fade and become muted. Focus turns to RAWING, BERUWIN
and MUNAN.
Crowd continue to celebrate in the background.
RAWING : Sons of rubbish! This is UNBELIEVABLE!
MUNAN : I told you. The rumours might be true! Simalungun has powers
we do not!
BERUWIN : Munan, Rawing doesn’t want to hear that right now.
RAWING : No, he’s right. Simalungun does seem to have powers the rest
of us don’t.

BERUWIN What?:
RAWING :
Look at his body. Not a single scar. I could never get a single
cut on him. I swear I scraped his body a few times with my
spear but he never bled.
MUNAN : Yes. Meanwhile, our Rawing – (BERUWIN hits MUNAN)
BERUWIN : Shut it! Are you sure?
RAWING : YES! Look at him! (gestures at SIMALUNGUN who is a
distance away)
BERUWIN : (looks at SIMALUNGUN) Well, when you put it like that…
RAWING : Ugghh! Let’s go!
SCENE 3: THE WATER SPIRIT AND RAWING’S PLANS

Sound: Stream flowing in a rainforest

Music: -
Props: RAWING’s spear, River, Tree

RAWING, BERUWIN and MUNAN have left the crowd behind. They are now walking by
a stream with BERUWIN and MUNAN carrying RAWING’s weapons. They eventually
stop.
RAWING : Arrgghhh! This is SO NOT FAIR! That wasn’t even a fair fight
-
MUNAN : - No, it wasn’t -
RAWING : Plans. We need plans!
MUNAN : Perhaps we can consult the water spirit.
RAWING : The what?
MUNAN : The water spirit. The ladies in Rumah Batang Lupar mentioned
it when we were there, remember? When Simalungun –
Sound: Thunder & howling wind

There is a sudden, loud thunder and wind. The river starts to swirl. Slowly, a woman-like
figure rises out of the river.
WATER SPIRIT : Did somebody say Simalungun?
RAWING, : AAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!! (throw weapons on the ground,
BERUWIN and run and hide behind a tree)
MUNAN
WATER SPIRIT : Hello?
Music: Magical fairy tale background music for videos

RAWING and BERUWIN start pushing MUNAN towards WATER SPIRIT. MUNAN tries
to fight them off but they are too strong.

WATER SPIRIT notices MUNAN.

WATER SPIRIT : Oh, was it you?
MUNAN : W-who-who a-are you?
WATER SPIRIT : I’m the water spirit!
MUNAN : Oh. (suddenly realizes) OHHHH!! (he turns to look at
RAWING and BERUWIN)
RAWING : (whispering) Ask her about Simalungun!
WATER SPIRIT : There it is again! Simalungun!

MUNAN : D-do y-you know him?
WATER SPIRIT : Why would YOU need to know?
MUNAN : Uh…
WATER SPIRIT : Tell me, do you know him well?
MUNAN : Uh…(looks back at RAWING) not really. But w-we know
uh… h-he’s a g-great fighter.
WATER SPIRIT : (laughs) Of course he is! It’s because of me!
RAWING is stirred by what WATER SPIRIT says and comes out from behind the tree.
BERUWIN tries to stop him but in vain.
RAWING : What did you say?
WATER SPIRIT : Oooo……and who are you?
RAWING : I am Rawing. What did you mean by Simalungun being great
because of you?
WATER SPIRIT : Well, I gave him undefeatable strength and unbreakable skin.
BERUWIN : (comes out of from behind the tree) How?
WATER SPIRIT : Because I can. Anything is possible for the water spirit.
RAWING : But why?
WATER SPIRIT : (sigh) Because…I was in love with him. And I still am.
(suddenly angry) BUT HE BETRAYED ME!
RAWING : Please, tell us more.
WATER SPIRIT : Truth be told, we were best friends. We grew up together. Soon
enough, I fell in love with him. And to show my love for him, I
gave him powers. I made him strong…stronger than any man
on this land. I made his skin unbreakable.(angrily) But then he
fell in love with another girl!
MUNAN : So he didn’t love you?
BERUWIN hits MUNAN.
WATER SPIRIT : Of course he did! But he said only as friends!
RAWING : So…he never visited you ever again?
WATER SPIRIT : No, ever since he met Jelinah, he rarely visits me again.
RAWING : Don’t you hate him for that?
WATER SPIRIT : I do, but what can I do?
RAWING : So…do you want to…take revenge?
WATER SPIRIT : Revenge?
RAWING : Yes, you hate him, right?
WATER SPIRIT : No, not necessarily…
RAWING : But he betrayed you. And left you. You should teach him a
lesson.
BERUWIN : Yeah! And teach Jelinah a lesson too.
MUNAN : Kill two birds with one stone!
RAWING : Yes! Let’s show the people of this land that you don’t mess
with a water spirit!
RAWING : Take back his powers!
BERUWIN : He’s nothing without his powers!
MUNAN : And he seems to have forgotten that!
WATER SPIRIT : It’s final! I’m going to take back his powers! I’ll show him!
RAWING : And we’ll help you!
MUNAN : How?
RAWING : Alright, I have a plan. Here’s what we’re going to do.

The four of them huddle and whisper together.
SCENE 4: THE KIDNAPPING

Sound: Cooking sound effect

Music: Cheeky music
Props: Tikar with food on top, Spear, Door

EPAH tiptoes into the kitchen. She takes a piece of food, smells it and eats it. Suddenly, she
hears JELINAH humming. She quickly hides behind a wall.
JELINAH and SIMALUNGUN walk in.

Focus is on JELINAH and SIMALUNGUN.

SIMALUNGUN : Mmmmm!!!! Is this all for me? It smells delicious!
In the background, RAWING, BERUWIN and MUNAN appear from the right. They hide
behind a door.
JELINAH : (happily nods and wraps up the food) Of course, darling.
Make sure to take care of yourself on the hunt, alright? I don’t
want you to get hurt.(puts the food in SIMALUNGUN’s
basket)
SIMALUNGUN : Anything for you, my love. (starts exiting the house) I’ll be
going now. (blows flying kisses at JELINAH)
JELINAH : Make sure to bring home some deer meat!
SIMALUNGUN : (chuckles) Will do! (exits the house and hunts in a far corner
forest)
JELINAH clears the table and hums happily.
Focus turns to RAWING, BERUWIN and MUNAN.
BERUWIN : (whispering) Right. He’s gone!
RAWING : (whispering) Excellent! Now, let’s go!
Music: Suspenseful background music

RAWING and BERUWIN creep into the house while MUNAN keeps watch outside.
JELINAH has her back turned to them.
JELINAH : Darling, did you forget some- (turns around, sees RAWING
and BERUWIN and screams) INTRUDER! WHAT ARE
YOU DOING IN MY HOUSE? MY HUSBAND -
EPAH peers from behind the wall, watching the scene secretly. She looks scared.
RAWING : (puts a spear to JELINAH’s throat) Keep making noise and
we’ll make sure you regret it!
JELINAH : My husband is the greatest warrior of the land. Harm me and
he will hunt you down.
RAWING : (laughs) That’s the plan. Beruwin! Tie her up!
BERUWIN shoves some fabric into JELINAH’s mouth and ties her up. All this while,
RAWING holds his spear threateningly at JELINAH.

The three of them exit the house, MUNAN giving the signal. JELINAH keeps straining
against BERUWIN. All four of them creep away.

As they disappear, EPAH comes out from behind the wall. Then, she runs. She finds
SIMALUNGUN in the corner. They talk soundlessly. SIMALUNGUN stabs his spear on

the ground. He points at one corner and EPAH runs in that direction. He runs in the
opposite direction with his spear.
SCENE 5: THE CLIMAX

Sound: River flowing in a rainforest

Music: Intense background music
Props: Tree, Spears, River

RAWING, BERUWIN, MUNAN and JELINAH are by Lupar River. BERUWIN and
MUNAN are holding JELINAH and she is straining against them. RAWING is sharpening
his spear.

Soon, SIMALUNGUN appears.

RAWING stops sharpening and stands. He opens his arms in a sarcastic welcoming way.
RAWING : Ah…Simalungun, how nice of you to join us.
SIMALUNGUN : You! I know you! I sparred with you in the Spearing Festival
two weeks ago!
JELINAH : (straining against BERUWIN and MUNAN) Simalungun!
SIMALUNGUN : My love! How dare you! You’ll pay for this! (points his spear
at RAWING menacingly)
JELINAH : No, Simalungun! Don’t give them a chance to start a war
between our longhouses!
RAWING : Well, well, well. Aren’t you a smart one? Sadly, I’ve got no use
of you anymore. Now, you’re more useful to me, DEAD!
Music: Most dramatic music “Climb Together”

RAWING stabs JELINAH.

JELINAH : (holds her abdomen) Ahhh!!!! (dies)
SIMALUNGUN : Nooooo!!!!!! JELINAH!!!!!!
Music: Most dramatic music “Climb Together”

SIMALUNGUN roars in anger, takes out his spear and starts sparring with RAWING.
They spar fiercely. RAWING leads SIMALUNGUN into the river gradually.

As SIMALUNGUN spars in the river, in the background, unbeknownst to him, WATER

SPIRIT appears. She starts doing a motion to suck SIMALUNGUN’s powers out of him.

SIMALUNGUN starts to feel it. His fights become weak.

SIMALUNGUN : (starts to grow weaker) W-what...what’s happening? (drops his
spear, kneels, holds up hands and looks at them)
RAWING : (evil laughs) What’s happening, is that you’ve lost your
powers! The water spirit has claimed it back! (pause) Now, we
can fight fairly! Go on, pick up your spear, warrior!
(sarcastically) Let’s see how great you are without your
powers!
SIMALUNGUN : (picks up his spear weakly and rises out of the water)
SIMALUNGUN attempts to continue to fight RAWING but he deflects his attacks easily.
He is weak.

Eventually, he is fatally stabbed and collapses beside JELINAH.

BERUWIN and MUNAN cheer. WATER SPIRIT screams in anguish! RAWING looks
down at SIMALUNGUN cockily. Then, he bends down to talk to SIMALUNGUN.
BERUWIN and MUNAN watch.
WATER SPIRIT : SIMALUNGUN! NO!!! (cries)
RAWING : See? Without your powers, you’re just like any other humans.
Weak. Mortal. What are you crying about, water spirit? He
betrayed you.
WATER SPIRIT : (in anguish) We weren’t supposed to kill him!
RAWING : Yeah, you seemed pretty comfortable when we talked about
killing his wife.
WATER SPIRIT : (angrily) (snatches RAWING by the collar) YOU! I SWEAR
I’LL -
RAWING : (pushes WATER SPIRIT’s arm away roughly)
RAWING, BERUWIN and MUNAN walk away, laughing.
WATER SPIRIT remains fallen on the ground, crying in anguish.
WATER SPIRIT : (crying) What have I done?
TUAI RUMAH, SANGGAU, LAWAI, MIT and KUNNI run into the scene.
LAWAI : (points at RAWING, BERUWIN and MUNAN) There! There
they are!
TUAI RUMAH : Sanggau, arrest them!
SANGGAU, MIT and KUNNI run towards RAWING, BERUWIN and MUNAN. They
catch them. TUAI RUMAH examines SIMALUNGUN and JELINAH’s breathing.

As this is going on, UMANG runs into the scene. She sees SIMALUNGUN and JELINAH
lying on the ground. She cries.
UMANG : (crying) Simalungun! Jelinah! (shakes a crying WATER
SPIRIT) What did you do?
WATER SPIRIT : I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it!
TUAI RUMAH : (pulls UMANG away) Stop it, Umang. Calm down.
UMANG kneels on the ground and puts her face in her hands, crying.
TUAI RUMAH : (puts a comforting hand on WATER SPIRIT) It’s alright. It’s
not your fault.
WATER SPIRIT : What can I do? I’ve killed him and his wife.
TUAI RUMAH : You can revive him. You’re the water spirit. Anything’s
possible for the water spirit, right?
WATER SPIRIT : You’re right. But I’m not sure if I can revive in human form.
TUAI RUMAH : But you can try, right?
WATER SPIRIT : (nods her head) I will try.
Music: Epic build up music – the storm
WATER SPIRIT does a ritual. She edges behind the tree and reappears, carrying a
crocodile head. She puts it on SIMALUNGUN.

SIMALUNGUN awakens and examines his body. TUAI RUMAH approaches him
cautiously, holding out his hand. SIMALUNGUN turns and snaps ferociously at him.
TUAI RUMAH recoils fearfully.

Both SIMALUNGUN and TUAI RUMAH study each other. Then, TUAI RUMAH
approaches SIMALUNGUN again, slowly. She touches SIMALUNGUN’s head.
TUAI RUMAH : Simalungun…my dear friend…you are now free to make
things right…go forth, Bujang Senang. Make me proud. Make
your longhouse proud. You shall never be defeated.
SIMALUNGUN : (roars, turns to face the audience)
Music fades. Everyone freezes and the light turns off. A light is shone on TUAI RUMAH.
She walks towards the centre.
TUAI RUMAH : I warned them. Never let jealousy drive your actions.
