Ancient people clay pottery because they needed it for their survival. They used the
post they made for cooking, storing food, and carrying things from place to place. Pottery was
so important to early cultures that scientists now study it to learn more about ancient
civilizations. The more advanced the pottery in terms of decoration, materials, glazes, and
manufacture, the more advanced the culture itself.
The artisan who makes pottery in North America today utilizes his or her skill

The idea of world or global citizenship is an important one. At a time when so many
of our most urgent challenges take a global form, it makes sense that the notion of
citizenship should expand beyond narrow national interests and that people across
the world should experience a sense of responsibility to those outside their local of
regional communities. One of the most important uses of this idea currently is
Global Citizen, an advocacy website and annual music festival. On September 26,
Manhattan’s Central Park will be packed with tens of thousands of enthusiastic
young people, eager to see artists such as Beyonce, and just as keen to express
empathy for the world’s poo.

Sadly, the admirable social consciousness Global Citizen taps into looks like it is
going to waste. The campaign offers a hopelessly depoliticized picture of poverty---
which is always a political problem above all --- and fails to make serious demands of
key institutions. From perspectives of the world’s poor, the Global Citizen Festival
looks less like a strategic intervention on their behalf and more like a demonstration
of young Americans’ support for a deemed agenda for global “development,” one
that serves the interests of the rich and powerful first and foremost. As young
people concerned about these issues, we urge Global Citizen to do better.

Global Citizen does do important work in raising awareness of poverty and mobilizing
an enormous amount of people, but because of its partnerships, sponsors, and
associations---the UN, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, Citibank,
Google, Unilever---and the special interests inherent in those associations, Global
Citizen risks providing cover for politicians and companies rather than holding them
accountable to young people who care about poverty.

Facebook has struggled to limit harmful content on its networks, such as content that
feeds ethnic violence, distributes misinformation, or facilitates election interference.
Personal date helps target their massages to certain groups of Facebook users. Identifying,
and policing content will be beyond
5 The outside assessor’s mandate. Ironically, steps to enhance privacy, such as ensuring
end-to-end encryption across all of Facebook’s messaging platforms will help in
protecting the identity of the spreaders of harmful messages, rather than help in
exposing them and their actions.
Access to Facebook seems free, because it costs no money, but users pay with
10 their data. The assessor should ask if, in terms of privacy, the users are being charged
fairly for the service they’re receiving. That raises the question of what a “fair” price is
for what Facebook provides.
Normally, a price is set by a competitive market, where customers can choose from
a range of service providers. This is not true on Facebook, where there are high
15 costs. Once again, these are not financial costs, but costs in terms of time and
effort, which leaves no other options similar to Facebook that are able to offer
equivalent services.
