SPLINTING
OBJECTIVE: The participants shall be able to correctly perform CPR POINTS

MUSCULOSKELETAL INJURY

8 Cover open wounds with a dry, sterile dressing, and apply pressure to control bleeding. 1

9 Apply a splint, and elevate the extremity about 6” (slightly above the level of the heart). 1

10 Apply cold packs if there is swelling, but do not place them directly on the skin. 1

11 Position the patient for transport, and secure the injured area. 1

HAND / WRIST SPINTING

12 Move the hand into the position of function. 1

13 Place a soft roller bandage in the palm. 1

17 Apply a padded board splint on the palmar side with fingers exposed. 1

18 Secure the splint with a roller bandage. 1

LONG BONE SPLINTING

19 Explains the procedure to the patient. 1

20 Directs the assistant to stabilize the extremity. 1

21 Exposes the injured extremity. 1

22 Removes jewelry from injured extremity. 1

23 Checks circulation, sensation, and motor function distal to the injury. 1

If severe deformity is present, or extremity is cyanotic or pulseless, applies gentle traction to align

bone.

25 If open wound is present, applies and secures a moist sterile dressing to the wound. 1

26 Selects an appropriate splint and applies padding if necessary. 1

Applies the splint to the injured extremity, while supporting fracture site and without excessive

movement.

28 Secures the splint. 1

29 Immobilizes joints above and below the fracture site. 1

30 Re-assesses the circulation, sensation, and motor function distal to the injury. 1

HIP IMMOBILIZATION

Assess pulse, motor, and sensory function. Cover wounds with dry, sterile dressings. Apply direct

pressure, if necessary.

Place patient onto a scoop stretcher or long backboard by logrolling onto the uninjured leg while

another provider supports injured extremity.

Continue to support the injured extremity while another provider places a blanket roll between the
33 1
patient s legs.

34 Place blankets and pillows under the injured extremity. 1

35 Secure both legs and the padding with at least three cravats or straps. 1

36 Reassess pulse, motor, and sensory function. 1

38 Evaluate the need for Scene Size Up 1

39 Immediately direct initiation / resumption of CPR at appropriate times 1
