BANDAGING

OBJECTIVE: The participants shall be able to correctly perform CPR POINTS

DETERMINE PROPER BSI

# STEPS POSSIBLE GIVEN 2ND TAKE

1 Takes appropriate body substance isolation precautions 1

SCENE SAFETY

2 Assess scene safety 1

3 Determine Nature of Illness 1

4 Determine Mechanism of Injury 1

5 Determine number of Patients 1

6 Assess need for additional help 1

7 Take cervical spine precautions as necessary 1

EXTERNAL BLEEDING CONTROL

8 Explains the procedure to the patient. 1

9 Applies and maintains direct pressure on wound site applying additional dressings if necessary. 1

If bleeding saturates dressing, may remove dressing and assess for bleeding source to apply well-directed
10 1
pressure.

11 Completes Step 3 before proceeding to other bleeding control methods as appropriate. 1

12 Elevates the extremity above the level of the heart. 1

If the hemorrhage continues, compresses artery at appropriate proximal pressure point with more than one finger,
13 1
while maintaining elevation.

17 If bleeding is still severe, re-evaluates treatment. 1

18 Applies appropriate dressings and bandages using firm pressure or a pressure bandage. 1

19 Applies a tourniquet if unable to control hemorrhage. 1

20 Considers immobilization of extremity. 1

21 Reassesses injury and interventions, obtains vital signs, and treats for shock as necessary. 1

BLEEDING AT THE NECK

22 Apply direct pressure to control bleeding. 1

23 Use roller gauze to secure a dressing in place. 1

24 Wrap the bandage around and under the patient s shoulder. 1

CARING FOR BURNS

Follow BSI precautions to help prevent infection. If safe to do so, remove the patient from the burning area;
25 extinguish or remove hot clothing and jewelry as necessary. If the wound(s) is still burning or hot, immerse the hot 1
area in cool, sterile water, or cover with a wet, cool dressing.

26 Provide high-flow oxygen and continue to assess the airway. 1

Estimate the severity of the burn, then cover the area with a dry, sterile dressing or clean sheet. Assess and treat
27 1
the patient for any other injuries.

28 Prepare for transport. Treat for shock. 1

29 Cover the patient with blankets to prevent loss of body heat. Transport promptly. 1

ARM SLING

30 Explains the procedure to the patient. 1

31 Removes jewelry from injured extremity. 1

32 Checks for circulation, sensation, and motor function distal to the injury. 1

33 Instructs patient to hold the injured extremity in a position of comfort. 1

Places the middle of the longest side of the triangular bandage under the hand with the ends over opposite
34 1
shoulders.

35 Ties the ends together behind patient’s neck. 1

36 Brings the remaining point of the triangular bandage around the elbow and secures with a safety pin or knot. 1

Secures the injured arm to the body by wrapping with roller bandage or triangular bandages. The injured arm
37 1
should be immobilized against the thorax.

38 Places padding as indicated to improve patient comfort. 1

39 Rechecks circulation, sensation, and motor function distal to the injury. 1

STABILIZING AN IMPALED OBJECT

40 Do not attempt to move or remove the object. Stabilize the impaled body part. 1

41 Control bleeding and stabilize the object in place using soft dressings, gauze, and/or tape. 1

42 Tape a rigid item over the stabilized object to protect it from movement during transport. 1

43 Do not attempt to move or remove the object. Stabilize the impaled body part. 1

CRITICAL CRITERIA POSSIBLE GIVEN 2ND TAKE

44 Take or verbalize BSI precautions 1

45 Evaluate the need for Scene Size Up 1

46 Immediately direct initiation / resumption of CPR at appropriate times 1
