IMMOBILIZATION, STABILIZATION, LIFTING AND MOVING

OBJECTIVE: The participants shall be able to correctly perform CPR POINTS

MANUAL IN LINE STABILIZATION

8 Kneel behind the patient, and place your hands firmly around the base of the skull on either side. 1

Support the lower jaw with your index and long fingers and the head with your palms. Gently lift the head into a
9 neutral, eyes-forward position, aligned with the torso. Do not move the head or neck excessively, forcefully, or 1
rapidly.

Continue to support the head manually while your partner places a rigid cervical collar around the neck. Maintain

manual support until you have completely secured the patient to a backboard.

CERVICAL STABILIZATION

11 Directs assistant to place and maintain patient's head in a neutral and in-line position. * 1

12 Explains the procedure to the patient. 1

Selects or adjusts to the appropriate size a commercially-available cervical immobilization device according to the

manufacturer’s instructions.

17 Ensures that no jewelry or clothing is between the immobilization device and the patient’s skin. 1

Immobilization device is applied and secured without excessive movement or compromise to the patient’s airway

or blood vessels of the neck.

SPINAL STABILIZATION IN A SUPINE PATIENT

19 Directs assistant to place and maintain patient's head in a neutral and in-line position. 1

20 Explains the procedure to the patient. 1

21 Correctly sizes and securely applies a cervical collar while maintaining spinal alignment. 1

22 Assesses circulation, sensation, and motor function in all four extremities. 1

23 Directs assistants throughout procedure. 1

24 Rolls the patient while maintaining spinal alignment. 1

25 Evaluates the patient's posterior after the patient is rolled.

26 Positions backboard appropriately.

28 Centers the patient on the backboard, while maintaining spinal alignment.

29 Secures the patient to the backboard with straps across the chest, hips, and legs.

30 Stabilizes the head in a neutral, in-line position and secures the head to the backboard LAST.

31 Re-assesses the patient's circulation, sensation, and motor function in all four extremities.

32 Performs the entire procedure without excessive movement of the patient’s spine.

SCOOP STRETCHER

33 Adjust stretcher length. 1

34 Lift the patient slightly and slide stretcher into place, one side at a time. 1

35 Lock the stretcher ends together, avoiding pinching. 1

36 Secure the patient to the scoop stretcher and transfer it to the cot. 1

POWER LIFT

37 Lock back into an upright position. Spread and bend legs. 1

38 Grasp the backboard, palms up. Balance and center the weight between the arms. 1

39 Position the feet, straddle the object, and distribute weight. 1

40 Straighten the legs and lift, keeping back locked in. 1
