ACHIMOTA SCHOOL MOCK II EXAMINATION

PHYSICS PRCTICALS
ALTERNATIVE B
[50 MARKS]

Answer TWO questions only

Write your name and index number in the spaces provided above.

Answer two questions only.

You are allowed an additional 15 minutes before the start of the examination to read this question paper.
During this time, you must not touch the apparatus.

You are required to record your observations as soon as they are made. The observation and any
mathematical working and answers to questions should be written in your answer booklet; scrap paper
must not be used.

You are not expected to copy out your work. The record may be pencil provided it can be read clearly. If
any piece of the apparatus provided has a label with a letter on it, this letter must be recorded in your
answer booklet in order that the examiner may identify which set of apparatus you used.

Neither a detailed description of the apparatus nor a full account of the method of carrying out the
experiment is required. You should, however, note any special precautions you have taken clearly.

You may use diagrams or otherwise to express exactly what the readings you have recorded mean and how
they were obtained.

I. You are provided with a meter rule clamped at its ends horizontally with a thread
tied to wire loops A and B tightly fixed at 20cm and 80cm marks.
II. Suspend the given pendulum from the midpoint O of the thread as shown in
Fig.1b such that the length x = 50cm.
III. Set the pendulum into oscillations in a plane perpendicular to the plane AOB
IV. Determine the time for 20 oscillations and calculate the period T and T2.
V. Repeat the procedure for x = 45.0cm, 40.0cm, 30.0cm and 20.0cm
VI. Tabulate your results
VII. Plot a graph of T2 on vertical axis and x on horizontal
VIII. Determine the slope S of your graph

b)
i. Draw a diagram showing all the forces acting at a point O in the setup for the
experiment. Hence write an expression to determine the outcome in the strings.

a) Using the diagram above as a guide, carry out the following instructions:

I. Mount the converging lens L vertically in the holder.

II. Set the illuminated ray box R at a distance u =20.0cm from the lens as shown in
the diagram above.
III. Adjust the position of the screen S until a sharp image of the illuminated wire
gauze is formed on S.
IV. Determine the distance v of S from the lens.

a) Using the diagram above as a guide, carry out the following instructions:

I. Connect the circuit as shown below. E is accumulator and PQ is a potentiometer.

II. Close the key K. where the jockey makes contact with the potentiometer wire at a
point J where PJ = l = 20.0cm,
III. measure and record the voltmeter reading V.
IV. Repeat the procedure with l = 30.0cm, 50.0cm, 60cm, 70.0cm.
V. Evaluate V-1 and L-1. Tabulate your results
VI. Plot a graph with V-1 on vertical axis against L-1 on horizontal axis
VII. State two precautions you took in performing this experiment.

ii. Give two advantages of the potentiometer over current measuring instrument.
[1mark]
iii. The p.d per cm length of a potentiometer wire is 0.01. What is the voltage across
the whole length of the wire? [1mark]
