Section 3. Hazard Identification.

Emergency Overview. Corrosive and a reducing agent.


May cause respiratory tract burning if swallowed.
Can cause delayed lung injury.
Causes severe skin and eye burns.
Can decompose at high temperatures and may
generate sulphur dioxide, a toxic gas by-product.

Potential Health Effects; Eye Extremely corrosive,


Corneal scarring may occur.
Skin May cause chemical burns.
Inhalation May severe irritation.
Ingestion Burns to mouth and throat.
Chronic Effects May cause delayed effects.
Carcinogenicity No known cancer hazards.
Reproductive Effects No known reproductive effects.

Section 4. First Aid Measures.

General. If you feel unwell, seek medical advice and show product label, if possible.
Corrosive effects may be delayed for up to 72 hours without any sensation.

Eye Contact. Immediately flush with warm water for 60 minutes.


Lift upper and lower eye lids to ensure all chemical is completely removed.
Always obtain immediate medical attention.

Skin Contact. Immediately remove all contaminated clothing, shoes and jewellery.
Wash infected area with warm water and soap for 60 minutes.
Obtain medical attention immediately.

Inhalation. Remove to fresh air and rest victim in half upright position.
Apply artificial respiration if indicated.
Apply CPR if no breathing AND pulse.
Always obtain medical attention.

Ingestion. Do NOT induce vomiting.


Contact local poison control centre
Give moderate quantities of milk to the conscious patient.
If the patient is unconscious, do not induce vomiting or give fluids.
Keep unconscious patient warm and seek medical attention.

Note to Physicians : Due to the severely irritating and corrosive nature of this material
always contact the local Poison Control Centre for detailed instructions.

Extinguishing Media; Water fog, carbon dioxide, or dry chemical media.


Agent appropriate for surrounding material.
Cool any exposed containers with water.

Fire and Explosion Hazards; Not sensitive to static discharge or mechanical impact.

Combustion Products; Sulphur dioxide will be generated at 1040 C.

Special Instructions; Evacuate non-emergency personnel from the area.


Fire fighters should wear full protective gear.
Operate full faced SCBA in positive pressure mode.

Section 6. Accidental Release Measures.

Safeguards. Restrict access to the area until clean-up is completed.


Wear adequate personnel protective equipment.

Initial Containment. Stop leak and contain spill if safe to do so.


DO NOT TOUCH SPILLED MATERIAL.

Small Spills. Absorb with an inert material and flush with water.

Large Spills. Prevent entry into sanitary sewers and confined areas.
Absorb with an inert material and collect for disposal.
Flush area with water.

Neutralizing Agent. Sodium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate.

Waste Disposal. Dispose according to local provincial/state or federal


guidelines, laws, and regulations.

Section 7. Handling and Storage.

Handling. Observe all warning and precautions listed.


Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene.
Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing.

Wash thoroughly after handling.

Storage. Keep containers closed when not in use.


Keep containers dry and store below 100 C.
Keep away from incompatible materials.
Do not handle near an open flame or other sources
sources of ignition.

Section 8. Exposure Controls and Personal Protection.

Engineering Controls. A good ventilation system will maintain employee


exposure below airborne exposure limits.

Eye/Face Protection. Full face shield and chemical safety goggles.


Maintain an eye wash fountain in handling area.

Skin Protection. Wear impervious protective (PVC) clothing.


Rubber boots and gloves are recommended.

Respiratory Protection. Generally not required.


Use approved NIOSH/MSHA respirator with mist
cartridge for high exposure situations.

Exposure Guidelines. OSHA PEL None Set.


NIOSH : TWA 5 mg M-3.
2 ppm for Sulphur Doixide.

Chemical Family. Inorganic reducing agent and disinfectant.
Appearance. Pale yellow liquid.
Odour. Pungent odour of sulphur dioxide.
Relative Density. 1.18 (15%) – 1.37 (40%) @ 200 C (Water = 1).
pH. 3.8 – 5.1.
Boiling Point. 1040 C and decomposes at 150o C.
Freezing Point. 60 C. (15%).
Vapour Pressure. 32 mm Hg @ 200 C.
Solubility in Water. 29 g in 100 ml at 200 C.
% Volatiles 60 – 85% (v/v)

Section 10. Stability and Reactivity.

Chemical Stability. Sulphur Dioxide will evolve at room temperature.


Will oxidize to the sulphate on exposure to air.

Conditions to Avoid. Temperature above 104o C, open flame and sparks.


A decrease in pH.
Crystallization temperature is 100 C.

Incompatibilities. Avoid contact with strong oxidizing agents, acids or bases.


Nitrates, nitrates and alcohols.

Hazardous Decomposition. Thermal decomposition products include sulphur


dioxide and oxides of sodium.

Hazardous Polymerization. Will not occur.

Ecotoxicological Information. TLm24, 48, 96 hour Mosquito Fish - 240 ppm.
