Dr Jekyll: a respected man of a higher class. Appears to be kind, generous, friendly, and social. Like many
people in the Victorian times, he has secrets that he must hide in order to maintain his reputation and status in
society. He believes in the duality of man from nature. He thinks everyone has a good and an evil side within
them. He finds a way to release this evil side and break free from repression, whilst maintaining his reputation.
He feels good about it initially, but things get out of control and he isn’t in control anymore. Hyde’s influence on
him grows as the story develops. He has close relations with Mr Utterson and Dr Lanyon, whom he fell out with
due to disagreements about science and religion. He accepts Hyde as a part of him and doesn’t see him as an
evil being at first. He only starts worrying when his friends find out about Hyde and he becomes at risk of getting
caught. In his youth, he satisfied his desires discreetly but as his status as a gentleman became more
important, he learnt to repress them in order to maintain his reputation. However, he became fascinated with the
idea of duality and made experiments, to invent a potion that would release the evil side of himself. Soon, his
fascination with this evil side of himself became uncontrollable, leading to his end.
