4. A stone tied to a string of length L is whirled in a vertical circle with the other end of the string at the centre. At
a certain instant of time, the stone is at its lowest position, and has a speed u. Find the magnitude of the
change in the velocity as it reaches a position where the string is horizontal

5. A small block is shot into each of the four tracks as shown below. Each of the tracks rises to the same height.

shown in the figure. The maximum angle  which string makes with the vertical after hitting the pin is :

8. A stone of mass 1 kg tied to a light inextensible string of length L = 10/3 meter is whirled in circular path in a
vertical plane. If the ratio of maximum to minimum tension is 4, the speed of the stone at the highest point of the
circle will be:

9. A particle of mass m is fixed to one end of a light rigid rod of length l and rotated in a vertical circular path
about its other end. The minimum speed of the particle at its highest point must be
(A) zero (B) gl (C) 1.1g (D) 2gl

LEVEL - II

1. An object of mass m is tied to string of length L and a variable horizontal force is

applied on it which starts at zero and gradually increases (it is pulled extremely
slowly so that equilibrium exists at all times) until the string makes an angle  with
the vertical. Find the work done by the force F:

2. A small heavy block is attached to the lower end of a light rod of length  which can be rotated about its
clamped upper end. What minimum horizontal velocity should the block be given so that it moves in a
complete vertical circle?

3. A simple pendulum consists of a 50 cm long string connected to a 100 g ball. The ball is pulled aside so that
the string makes an angle of 37 with the vertical and is then released. Find the tension in the string when the
bob is at its lowest position.

4. Consider the shown arrangement when a is bob of mass ‘m’ is suspended by

means of a string connected to peg P. If the bob is given a horizontal velocity
having magnitude 3gl , find the minimum speed of the bob in subsequent motion.

5. A small block of mass m slides along a frictionless loop inside loop track B

as shown in figure. Find the minimum ratio R/r so that the block may R
not lose contact at the highest point of inner loop.

6. A heavy particle is suspended by a 1.5 m long string. It is given a horizontal velocity of 57 m/s. (a) Find the
angle made by the string with the upward vertical, when it becomes slack. (b) Find the speed of the particle at
this instant. (c) Find the maximum height reached by the particle over the point of suspension. Take g = 10

7. A simple pendulum of length L having a bob of mass m is deflected from its rest position by an
angle  and released in the figure. The string hits a peg which is fixed at a distance x below the L  x
point of suspension and the bob starts going in a circle centred at the peg. (a) Assuming that
m
initially the bob has a height less than the peg show that the maximum height reached by the
bob equals its initial height. (b) If the pendulum is released with  = 90 and x = L/2 find the
maximum height reached by the bob above its lowest position before the string becomes slack.
