In English, verbs are the action parts of a sentence.

A verb describes an
action, a state of being or an event in different forms. Verbs have basically
three different forms: base form, past form, past participle form. We can
also add -s/es/ies and -ing form to this list.

A participle refers to the modified form of a verb that in some cases, shows
characteristics of both verbs and adjectives. Participles are mainly used in
sentences to form the past and perfect tenses.
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, a participle is defined as “a
word formed from a verb, ending in -ing (= the present participle) or -ed, -
en, etc.”, and according to the Cambridge Dictionary, it is defined as “a
form of a verb, often ending in “-ed” or “-ing” and used with auxiliary verbs
to make verb tenses, or to form adjectives”. The Merriam-Webster
Dictionary defines a participle as “an English verbal form that has the
function of an adjective and at the same time shows such verbal features
as tense and voice and capacity to take an object”. “A participle”, according
to the Collins Dictionary, “is a form of a verb that can be used in compound
tenses of the verb. There are two participles in English: the past participle,
which usually ends in ‘-ed’, and the present participle, which ends in ‘-ing’.”

A gerund is generally formed with the addition of ‘-ing’. It can be used
flexibly in a sentence. It can be used to refer to actions and also to pose
them as reasons for a particular event. It can be used in different parts of a
sentence.

A gerund, according to the Cambridge Dictionary, is “a word ending in ‘-ing’


that is made from a verb and used like a noun.” The Merriam-Webster
Dictionary gives a much more elaborate definition. According to them, a
gerund is “the English verbal noun ending in -ing that has the function of a
substantive and at the same time shows the verbal features of tense, voice,
and capacity to take adverbial qualifiers and to govern objects.” The Oxford
Learner’s Dictionary defines a gerund as “a noun in the form of the present
participle of a verb (that is, ending in -ing)”. According to the Collins
Dictionary, a gerund is “a noun formed from a verb which refers to an
action, process, or state. In English, gerunds end in ‘-ing’.
