Kalinga background

Kalinga originated from the Gaddang and Ibanag languages meaning, “Headhunter”. In
the days gone by, headhunting was once regarded a noble “pursuit” and symbolized
bravery. Theirs was a warrior society that accorded tatoos as status symbols awarded
to warriors which men respected and women admired.

The Kalingas are a proud people and well known for their intricate hand-woven textiles
and beautiful and colorful beaded jewelry. In every celebration, they incorporate dance
and traditional music as a form of thanksgiving and cultural preservation. The Butbut
Kalinga resides in Tinglayan, Kalinga.

The Kalinga people are an indigenous group in the Philippines who are known for their
strong cultural traditions and warrior ethos. They are believed to have migrated from
Taiwan to the Philippine Cordilleras around 3,000 years ago.

Kalinga food

Fresh vegetables, such as taro leaves, fiddlehead ferns, and bamboo shoots, are
staples in Kalinga cuisine. The use of these indigenous ingredients not only adds
nutritional value but also celebrates the richness of the region's agricultural heritage.

top producer of the staple as well as the biggest contributor to corn production in the
Cordillera region.

Kalinga clothes

. Kalinga men wear ba-ag (loincloths) while the women wear saya (colourful garment
covering the waist down to the feet). The women are also tattooed on their arms up to
their shoulders and wear colourful ornaments like bracelets, earrings, and necklaces,
especially on the day of festivities.

Kalinga livelihood

The livelihood of the Kalinga is the payaw (ricefields) and the uma (swidden farm).
Aside from food production, cattle are pastured in the fields and poultry raised in the
backyard. Small fish (ugadiw), shell, and marine life are gathered from rivers.
