Exercise #32 p 720:

The number of incoming students at two campuses of a midwestern university have historically
been normally distributed. The main campus incoming class has a mean of 3,402 and a standard
deviation of 425, and the regional campus incoming class has a mean of 730 and a standard
deviation of 102. If there were 3,740 incoming students on the main campus and 822 on the
regional campus, which had the more successful year in student recruitment based on z scores?

Value−mean
z=
Standard deviation

Main Campus 3740 – 3402

z= =0.795
425

822−730
Regional Campus z= =0.902
102

The Regional Campus had a more successful year because it had a higher z score than the Main
Campus.

Exercise #24 p 732 (Note: See instructions for parts (a) - (f) on p 731.

The data shown indicate the number of wins and the number of goals scored for teams in the
National Hockey League after the first month of the season.

Predict the number of goals for a team with 8 wins.

a) Draw a scatter plot.

b) Find the value for r.

Step by step solution:

Data:
X= 10,9,6,5,4,12,11,8,7,5,9,8,6,6,4
Y = 23,22,15,15,10,26,26,26,21,16,12,19,16,16,11
r=?
Formula:

r=
∑ ( x i−X ) ( y i−Y )
√ ∑ ( x i− X̄ )2 ∑ ( y i−Y )2
Solution:
Now we have to find mean of both datasets:
Mean for Dataset X:
110
X=
15
X =7.333
Mean for Dataset Y:
274
Y=
15

Y =18.267

-3.333 11.109 -7.267 52.809 24.220911

∑ (xi – X )2 = 87.333335, ∑ ( y i – Y )2 = 420.933335,

∑ (xi - X̄ ) (yi – Y ) = 152.666665

r Calculation:

∑ ( x i – X̄ ) ( y i – Y )
r=
√∑ ( xi – x )2 ∑ ( y i – Y )2
Now putting values in the above equation:

152.666665
r=
√( 87.333335 )( 420.933335 )
152.666665
r = 191.7329

r ≈ 0.796

The value of r is 0.796 or 0.80

c) Test the significance of r at the 5% level and at the 1% level.

Table 11-4 Significant Values for the Correlation Coefficient

Sample Size 5% 1% r is significant at the 5% and 1% level.

15 .514 .641
Yes Yes

d) Find the equation of the regression line and draw the line on the scatter plot, but only

if r is significant.

152.6667
b= 1.7481
87.3333

a=18.267−1.7481× 7.333=5.447

Regressionline : y =5.447+1.748 x

e) Describe the nature of the relationship if one exists.

Since r is positive and the correlation is significant, there is a strong positive linear

relationship between the number of wins and the number of goals scored. This implies

that, typically, teams with more wins tend to score more goals.

f) Make the requested prediction using your regression line if possible.

y=5.45+ 1.75× ( 8 )
y=19.45
y ≈ 19

Thus, a team with 8 wins is predicted to score approximately 19 goals.
