Types of Input Devices

An input device (輸入設備) allows user to enter data into a computer and converts the data into

a form that can be read by the computer.

Scanners
A scanner can be used to input text and graphics into computers by scanning a printed document

or a photo. It projects light onto a document to be scanned, captures the reflected light and

converts it into a digital image.

OCR
A scanner can also be used with optical character recognition (OCR) software (光符識別軟件) to

convert text on a scanned image into a text file.

Barcode readers
A bar code reader (條碼閱讀機) is a small scanner which captures images of bar codes and
translates them into digital data. Bar code readers are widely used in libraries, cashiers and
supermarkets.
QR code readers
A QR code reader (二維碼閱讀機) is an optical scanning device able to read QR codes. Most
smartphones and tablets have built-in QR code scanners in their cameras.
Microphones
Microphones convert sound signals to electrical signals. They allow users to record sound into a
computer.
Digital Cameras
A digital camera uses an image sensor to capture scenes and turn them into digital images. These
images are then stored in a memory card. The amount of memory space taken by an image
depends on the file format and the image resolution.
Digital Video Cameras
A digital video camera (DVCAM) is a device that captures motion picture information from live
environments, encoding it into data that can be decoded or transcoded into electronic visual
media.
Webcams
A webcam is a special type of digital cameras which are connected to a computer via a cable or
wireless connection. Webcams are commonly used for video conferencing and producing short
video clips.

Pixels are arranged in a 2-dimensional grid, represented using squares.
