Printers
Printers
1- IMPACT PRINTERS
 They are very noisy

 Printing quality is very low.

 Suitable for printing text.

Ex : Dot Matrix Printer

2- NON-IMPACT PRINTERS
❏ Quiet when working

❏ Produce high quality output

Ex : Inkjet Printer , Laser Printer

Dot matrix printer
Printers – IMPACT PRINTERS

➔ Produce their output by hammering pins or

character patterns against a ribbon and the
paper.
➔ Can be used where multiple copies of the same
output are needed.
➔ Some business use them for invoices.
➔ The quality of the print out is not very good.
➔ After printing, the printout is torn off from the
long strip.
Examples
Dot matrix printers Features
1. Quality is poor,
2. Noisy.
3. Very cheap
4. Inked ribbons last for a long time

Examples:
1. Airline tickets have several duplicate pages, all printed in one go.
2. Shop receipts.
3. Several ‘carbon copies’ can be printed in one go.

● Describe 2 types of Printers (laser and Inkjet)

● Discuss the uses, advantages and disadvantages

of both of them.
Pre assessment
What is the type of the laser printer?
⚫ Impact printer

⚫ Non-impact printer
Introduction
⚫ If you want a physical copy of some data
on paper (a ‘hardcopy’) you will need a device
that can make marks on paper - a printer.

⚫ An inkjet printer uses ink to print documents, while

a laser printer uses a laser to print documents.

Earth Day and printers
This Earth Day, do your
part to ease the burden on
our landfill. Instead of
throwing away your
old laptops, desktops and
printers, choose one of the
many ways you can
responsibly recycle them
for free and sometimes
even for store credit.
Ink-Jet Printers – NON IMPACT
PRINTERS
➔ Prints by spraying tiny drops of ink onto the paper quietly.
➔ Prints in both colour and black on normal paper
➔ The paper should not be too absorbent.
➔ Slower than laser printers.
➔ Used commonly at home, schools. It's cheaper to buy.
➔ Can print good quality graphics.
⚫ Non-absorbent refers to materials that do not absorb or soak up
liquids or other substances
What is the relation between the tissue
paper and the A4 papers?

Vs
Laser Printers – NON IMPACT
PRINTERS
Uses ordinary papers and prints very fast
Speed is measured in pages per minute and a fast printer
can produce 40 pages per minutes
High quality print outs.
Can print graphics.
The main disadvantage is cost. So not very commonly used
at homes. Used mostly in large businesses.
The color cartridges are very expensive to buy. Running cost
is very high.

Display Screens / Monitors

Objectives
⚫ Identify 2 types of monitors.
⚫ Describe pixels and screen resolution.
Display screens (Visual Display Unit)

⚫ Display Screens comes as a part of the

computer system. We call it a monitor.
⚫ Monitors come in different sizes. Size of
the monitor is measured from the top left
corner to the bottom right corner
⚫ A screen display can be either
monochrome or color.
Measuring
Monochrome screens
⚫White, green or orange text on a black background.
⚫Suitable for computer systems that are used to display
only texts, although it can display images.
⚫Cheaper and smaller than other screen types.
Activity 1
⚫ Define Monochrome screens and Thin screens.
⚫ What is the difference between
monochrome(CRT) and Flat screens (TFT)

Activity 2
⚫ What are pixels?
⚫ What is a screen resolution?
What Minecraft Looks Like Running on an
80s Monochrome Monitor
CRT
⚫ Older monitors and take up more space.
⚫ Less expensive and becoming rare as Thin
monitors are replacing them.
How CRT Monitor Works:
⚫ CRT monitor produces an image made of tiny
dots
⚫ Each dot is RED, GREEN, or BLUE (RGB) of

different intensities
Pixels
⚫ A pixel is the smallest unit of a digital image or graphic that
can be displayed and represented on a digital display device.
⚫ Pixels are small dots that are combined to form a complete
image, video, text or any visible thing on a computer display.
⚫ The term "pixel" is actually short for "Picture Element.“
Pixels

How many pixels are in the last square?

PPI= pixel per inch

Screen resolution

⚫ The screen resolution is the number of separate points across

(horizontally) and down( vertically) the screen which can be displayed.

⚫ For applications like Photoshop, an extremely high resolution is

essential.
⚫ If the resolution is not high enough, the lines in the drawing will not be
clear.
