QUESTION 4
QUESTION 4.1
THE SPAR MISSION STATEMENT REVIEW

The Spar mission statement is not well-written. The mission statement of Spar does
define the product it sells, food, for its key stake holders (Botha & Vrba, 2021).
However, it does not elaborate into the specific details of the key stake holders, and
detail could be added by mentioning fresh produce or 1st grade food. The mission
statement does outline its vision by stating that it wishes to remain the world’s
leading voluntary food retail chain, but it does not state the reasons it wishes for this
(Botha & Vrba, 2021). The key priorities mentioned in this mission is to expand the
Spar Chain brand; the access and availability of more available Spars by growing its
presence; to enhance the competitiveness and productivity in the food chain store
market; and to increase the profits of the organisation worldwide (Botha & Vrba,
2021). However, there is no mention of quality or quantity of products or services.
There is no mention of improving or bettering the lives of its consumers and
supporting global goals. The profitability is something that should not be mentioned
in a mission statement as it is something that should be implied when mentioning the
growth of a company. The overall tone of the mission statement does not foster a
sense of unity (Botha & Vrba, 2021). There is no philosophical anchor for all the
organisational activities (Botha & Vrba, 2021). There is no sense of empowerment
and enthusiasm for employees, consumers, and partners involved (Botha & Vrba,
2021). The goals and objectives are stated, but the writing style is poor and not
inspiring to readers (Botha & Vrba, 2021).
