HULL FRAMING SYSTEMS

GROUP C
DMS(DO)
QUESTION

Describe and compare transverse and longitudinal

framing sys ems and explain the need for
combination framing sys em.
FRAMING SYSTEMS
ere are three possible ways to fit the secondary supporting members:

 Transverse Framing Sys em

 Longitudinal Framing Sys em
 Combined or Mixed Framing Sys em
TRANSVERSE FRAMING SYSTEM
 e hold frames are fitted transversely
 Longitudinal deck girders support the
transverse deck beams
 Longitudinal s rength in a transversely
framed ship is provided by:
 e cen re girder, the shell plating and
inner bottom plating
 By the deck plating outboard of ha ch and
machinery casing openings
 By a number of large, widely spaced
longitudinal members e.g. longitudinal
deck girders

LONGITUDINAL FRAMING SYSTEM
 All secondary supporting members are fitted the
longitudinal direction and are known as
longitudinals
 e sys em consis s of many small, closely
spaced longitudinals supporting the plating
directly and being suppor ed in turn by a few
largely spaced longitudinals
 It is in tankers that this sys em in its purest
form is employed
 ey also con ribu e to the longitudinal s rength
of the ship, making the longitudinal framing
sys em more s ruc urally efficient than the
transverse sys em

COMPARISON
 No con ribution to the ship’s resis ance to  More resis ant to buckling be ween

compressive s resses while bending in
seaway.
 Not optimal from the s andpoint of  Superior s ruc ural efficiency because

 e in rusion of deep webs in o prime cargo spaces for ships carrying packaged cargo is a
disadvan age of longitudinal framing sys em.
 As the hull narrows toward bow and s em, the girth necessary reduces.

 Difficulties in cons ruction arise when the longitudinal frames converge so closely.

 For this reason, transverse framing is usually resor ed to at the bow and s em of longitudinally
framed ships.
COMBINED FRAMING SYSTEM
 A combination of both transverse and
longitudinal framing is adop ed in the same
cross section of the ship.
 Longitudinal framing is used in the bottom
and decks.
 is has the advan age of ex ra longitudinal
s rength and resis ance to compressive pla e
buckling.
 Transverse framing is used in the sides.
 is precludes the need for deep webs that
might inhibit efficient cargo s owage.
