Estimation
Mr Lam asks his staff to estimate the capacity of a swimming pool. Peter and John record their measurements in the
sketches below, and then calculate the estimated capacity based on these sketches.

(a) Find the estimated capacities of the swimming pool made by Peter and John respectively.
(b) Given that the estimated capacity made by Peter is smaller than the actual capacity, and the percentage error is
exactly 2%, what is the actual capacity of the swimming pool?
(c) Using the results of (a) and (b), find the percentage error of the estimated capacity made by John. Whose
estimate is more accurate?

(ii) Factorize a + 8 a b +16 b .

(a) Factorize x −25 .

x 6 −25 3 x 3 +15

÷ 2 ÷( x2 −10 x +25)
(b) Hence, simplify x −5 x x −25

The figure shows a cuboid of length (x + 4) cm, width 2y cm and

height (4x – 2) cm. Assume the total surface area of the cuboid is
A cm2.

(a) Show that A=8 x 2 +20 xy+28 x+8 y −16 .

(b) Make y the subject of the formula in (a).

(c) Hence, find the value of y when A = 488 and x = 4.
