1. INTRODUCTION

1.1. General

OML58 Block, operated by TEP NG (TOTAL E&P Nigeria Ltd) is located in Nigeria, at some 75
km North-West from Port Harcourt and comprises OGBOGU Flow Station, OBITE Treatment
Center, OGBOGU Cluster, various clusters, wells, flow lines and pipelines.
TEG NG intends to upgrade OML 58 facilities and mainly increase gas production from 10.65
MMSm3/d up to 15.65 MMSm3/d of marketable gas.
TEP NG is also developing the project of an independent power plant (IPP) in the vicinity of the
OBITE TC (optional scope C). The IPP will be supplied with gas by a GAS SUPPLY UNIT (IPP-
GSU) located nearby the OBITE TC.
The IPP-GSU will provide a maximum of 2.5 MMSm3/d of fuel gas to the turbine generator sets
located on IPP.
The present project covers the phase 1 upgrade which includes facilities to cover the oil and
gas production profile of existing and new wells until the 31st of December 2013 and the IPP-
GSU.

1.2. Objectives
The purpose of this document is to specify the minimum technical requirements that the cables
dedicated to cathodic protection and to be installed during OML 58 Upgrade Project shall
satisfy.

This document does not refer to any existing equipment already installed on sites.

4. CABLES SPECIFICATION
The cathodic protection system will comprise cables for impressed current anodes, sacrificial
anodes, positive circuit, negative circuit and monitoring.

Impressed current anode cables will connect the permanent cathodic protection groundbed
anodes to the positive anode junction box located near the groundbed.

Sacrificial anode cables will allow the connection of the magnesium anodes to the protected
buried structures through the test posts.

The positive cables will connect the positive output of each cathodic protection T/R to the
positive junction box located near each groundbed.

The negative cables will be laid between the negative T/R output and the structures under
protection through the negative junction box.

4.1. Site Conditions

The following environmental conditions shall be taken into account for the construction and
installation of the future CP cables:
¾ Air temperature : Minimum 18°C - Maximum 35°C

¾ Soil Temperature : 20 to 25 °C

¾ Rain fall : 4000 mm yearly average

¾ Air relative humidity : Average of 92%

4.2. Cables Insulation and Sheath

All D.C. positive, negative bond and test cathodic protection cables will be insulated with XLPE /
PVC, to withstand the prevailing chemical and mechanical conditions, for use in conduit or
buried use or clipped to steel structures. PVDF/HMWPE sheath shall be used for anode cables.
All DC cables dedicated to cathodic protection shall be in black colour.
All conductors will be multi strand copper 600/1000V grade.

4.3. Cables Dimensions

Cable conductor sizes will be sufficient to carry the maximum designed current without
excessive volts drop, in accordance with the requirement for a maximum D.C voltage for the
D.C current source (transformer rectifier).

The minimum cross-section area of the DC cables shall be as follow:

• 25 to 50 mm² cables between transformer rectifier and positive junction boxes

(positive cables).

“This document is the property of TEP NG. It must not be reproduced or transmitted to others without written authorization from the Company”.

• 25 to 35 mm² cables between positive junction boxes and anodes groundbed junction
boxes, anode current distribution.

• 25 to 50 mm² cables between cathodic protection transformer rectifier and negative

junction boxes (negative cables).

• 35 mm² cables for bond and equipotential connections (negative cables).

• 16 to 25 mm² cables for impressed current anodes (anodes cables).

• 16 mm² cables for sacrificial anodes.

• 10 mm² for test post connections (monitoring cables).

As far as possible to optimize procurement phases and avoid installation clashes, cables
section area shall be optimized.

Cables lengths and cables routing will be detailed in CP project drawings.

4.4. Cables Identification

All cables shall be clearly identified and labelled at terminal blocks of test points, junction boxes,
bond boxes and transformer rectifiers.

Each cable shall be then equipped with a dedicated tag reference number.

4.5. Cables Installation

Cathodic protection cables shall be installed as per described in COMPANY specification GS
COR 110 and GS COR 111 for buried installation.

Prior and during the installation of cable, particular care shall be taken to ensure than the cable
sheath is not damaged. Deterioration of cable sheath would lead to the failure of the cable.

Cables shall be then laid in 80 cm depth trenches, previously covered with a sand lay as the
backfill. This backfill material around the cable shall be free of rocks and other matter that may
damage the CP cable sheath.

A warning mesh shall be then installed 20 cm above in order to prevent possible deterioration
during future excavations.

Underground splices on the main feeding cables, using splice kits, shall be as far as possible
limited.

In order to avoid strain on the cables, sufficient slack shall be left during the installation. Slack is
also necessary to facilitate cable connections inside junction and test boxes.

Cables to be installed above ground, dependant on cable routing, shall be installed on cable
trays made of galvanized steel.

4.6. Transport & Storage

Cathodic Protection cables shall be ship from the origin of supply on cable drum.

Each end of the cable shall be firmly secured to the cable and durably sealed to prevent
entrance moisture.

The cable drum shall be covered with suitable material to provide physical protection to the
cable during shipping and storage periods.

5. GUARANTEE & CERTIFICATES

No material shall be shipped from the origin of supply until an inspection certificate has been
approved and signed by the Inspection Authority, guarantying that the materials conform to
the conditions of this specification.
This certificate shall include certificates of shipment.

The Manufacturer / Supplier shall then submit prior to shipping as a minimum, the following
documents:

• Certified test data, test procedures, cable electrical and mechanical properties.

• Cable material specification

• Certified drawings showing complete details of cable assembly and dimensions of various
cable sizes.

• Restrictions for use in adverse environments.
