PERSPECTIVES OF BECOMING A CHEMISTRY TEACHER.

Learning chemistry has brought a positive feeling into my life, the experience I’ve gained
so far has brought a certain liking unto this subject. Day in day out I feel that I need to
understand chemistry more and more, cover more details and more chemistry books and scholar
content majorly based on reactions in chemistry, both organic and inorganic part and also build a
better and further understanding on the periodic table. Am positive that by doing this I will build
up my confidence and content delivery as a chemistry teacher.

Consequently, my further pursue in chemistry in tertiary level has been greatly inspired
by the fact that most students despise chemistry due to its nature but personally, I think it is just
ignorance among students that brings this view towards chemistry. I would like to “kill” such
thoughts and feelings by introducing best ways to approaching and tackling chemistry questions.
I would employ tactics like; using examples from day to day experiences, starting a lesson with a
thought provoking question to capture their attention, incorporating practical where necessary
which can be carried out in a school laboratory and also tracking all of my students’ progress
individually to understand each of their weaknesses to help them build on them and also
understand their strengths to put less emphasis on them will am teaching such an individual.
According to myself, chemistry will mean a lot to my students. When I say a lot I mean
life. Given the common saying “build on your chemistry” which means increasing your
proficiency in something, hopefully that will encourage my students to like chemistry. Even for
those who don’t really like chemistry, which is not a surprise since they all can’t like chemistry, I
can try as much as I can to see that they do grasp even a little bit of some chemistry.
One thing that I truly dislike is the fact that some of the students will always be stubborn
and hence giving us chemistry teachers a hard moment to engage them like other students. That
said I feel it’s up to the teacher to know how to deal with such cases, given the fact that they are
all your students hence an effort to work with each of them. A better way to succeed in the
teaching of chemistry I think is by employing tactics and skills that engages learners more into
tasks.
Some of the roles I opt to play is encouraging my students to develop positive feelings
towards chemistry and embrace it, take chemistry just as other subjects which they feel are
working for them and also try to understand the practical part if not the theory part. And as they
decide on working to improve on chemistry as their teacher I would like to understand more why
the dislikes in chemistry at that particular school.
In conclusion, given a role as a teacher to control and guide my students into achieving
higher grades in chemistry, I will look up to strengthening in their specified areas. Can be either
the periodic table or flow charts or any part the student feel comfortable with. Our motto, that is,
me and my students will be “chemistry is life, opt to build your chemistry.”
