3. Purpose

To tell operators that an optional single-step procedure to tighten tie bolts is now
available for wheels that have an even number of tie bolts. Dual-spindle automatic torque
equipment is necessary to do this single-step procedure.

4. Reason

The single-step torque procedure gives faster wheel assembly.

5. Procedure

A. Do not use the single-step torque procedure if one of these conditions is not
possible:

(1) Make sure that the dual-spindle automatic torque equipment can simultaneously
apply torque to the two spindles.

(2) Make sure that the calibration of the dual-spindle automatic torque equipment
has not more than 2% error.

(3) Program the RPM limit of dual-spindle equipment to 30 RPM maximum for
preliminary torque value.

(4) Program the RPM limit of dual-spindle equipment to 15 RPM maximum for final
torque value.

(5) Program the preliminary and final torque values as shown in the CMM.

B. Make sure that the mating faces have no contamination.

C. Follow the procedure for wheel and tire assembly that is given in the CMM.

If wheel assemblies have a spacer, make sure that the equipment used to seat the
tire can pull the wheel halves fully together. The wheel halves are sufficiently
together when a 0.005 feeler gauge cannot easily be pushed under the wheel
spacer. Do this verification one time for each wheel part number and tire part number
combination.

If wheel assemblies do not have a spacer, make sure that the equipment used to
seat the tire can pull the wheel halves fully together. The wheel halves are sufficiently
together when a 0.005 feeler gauge cannot easily be pushed between the wheel
halves. Do this verification one time for each wheel part number and tire part number
combination.

D. Follow the procedure to apply the specified anti-seize compound to the bolts,
washers, and nuts as shown in the CMM.

E. Install the bolts, washers, and nuts.

F. Do a test of the nuts. Use your hand to turn each nut as far as possible on a tie bolt.
Discard the nut if the bolt extends out of the nut.

G. Put the dual-spindle equipment on the nuts at the 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock positions.
Tighten the nuts to the preliminary torque value. Keep the dual-spindle equipment at
the 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock positions and tighten to the final torque value.

H. Put the dual-spindle equipment on the nuts at the 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock positions.
Tighten the nuts to the preliminary torque value. Keep the dual-spindle equipment at
the 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock positions and tighten to the final torque value.

I. Tighten each remaining pair of opposite nuts in a clockwise or counterclockwise

sequence to the preliminary and final torques. Apply final torque to each pair of nuts
before you apply torque to the next pair of nuts.

If a final torque is less than 96% of the specified final torque, fix the problem. If the
error occurs a second time on the same two bolts and two nuts, replace them with
new bolts and nuts. Apply the specified anti-seize compound and tighten the nuts to
the preliminary and final torque.

If a final torque is more than 104% of the final torque value, fix the problem. Replace
the two bolts and two nuts with new bolts and nuts. Apply the specified anti-seize
compound and tighten the nuts to the preliminary and final torque. Discard the
removed bolts and nuts.
