QUESTION 1

1.1 Solve for 𝑥:

1.1.1 (1 + 3𝑥 )(𝑥 − 1) = 0 (2)

The graph of 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 ; 𝑎 ≠ 0 is drawn below.

 A(−2; 4) is a point on 𝑓.

 𝑓 intersects the 𝑥 − axis at (−3; 0) and (2; 0).

QUESTION 7

7.1 Exactly five years ago Mpho bought a new car for R 145 000. The current book
value of this car is R 72 500. If the car depreciates by a fixed annual rate according
to the reducing-balance method, calculate the rate of depreciation.

7.2 Patric decided to start saving before retirement. He makes payments of


R 10 000 monthly into an account yielding 7,72% p.a. compounded monthly,
starting on 30 November 2016 with a final payment on 30 April 2026.

7.2.1 Calculate how much will be in the savings account immediately after the last
deposit is made. (4)

7.2.2 At the end of the investment period Patric re-invested the full amount in
order for him to be able to draw a monthly pension from the fund.

He re-invested the money at an interest rate of 10% p.a. compounded


monthly. If he draws an amount of R 30 000 per month from this
investment, for how many full months will he be able to receive R 30 000? (4)

7.2.3 After withdrawing R 30 000 for 20 months Patric requires R 1 500 000.
Determine whether he will be able to get this amount of money from this
annuity. (4)
