Lindstrom, C., & Goade, M. (2020). We are

water protectors. Roaring Brook Press.

Water is the first medicine. It affects and

connects us all... When a black snake
threatens to destroy the Earth and poison her
people's water, one young water protector
takes a stand to defend Earth's most sacred
resource. Inspired by the many indigenous-led
movements across North America, this bold
and lyrical picture book issues an urgent
rallying cry to safeguard the Earth's water from
harm and corruption. (Eisenhower Public
Library District)

Maillard, K.N. (2019). Fry bread: A Native

American family story. Roaring Brook Press

This delightful picture book tells the story of fry

bread and all it represents. Its preparation,
history, and presence in family gatherings
across many American Indian cultures is
explained through beautiful verses and
endearing illustrations. Fry bread is food, and
so much more. Reading this book reminds us of
the tenacity and resilience of American
Indians. (Acorn Naturalists)

Gonzalez, K.N. (2022). The coquíes still sing: A

story of home, hope, and rebuilding. Roaring
Brook Press.

Co-quí, co-quí! The coquí frogs sing to Elena

from her family’s beloved mango tree―their
calls so familiar that they might as well be
singing, “You are home, you are safe.” But
home is suddenly not safe when a hurricane
threatens to destroy everything that Elena
knows.

As time passes, Elena, alongside her

community, begins to rebuild their home,
planting seeds of hope along the way. When
the sounds of the coquíes gradually return,
they reflect the resilience and strength of
Elena, her family, and her fellow Puerto Ricans.

Marquez, M. C. (2023). Mother of sharks.

Penguin Workshop

As the sun sets over another gorgeous day at

la Playita Del Condado in Puerto Rico, Meli
doesn't want to go home. She loves the ocean
more than anything, and with only five minutes
left at the beach, she knows exactly where her
last stop should be: the tidal pools. They are
small universes of their own teeming with
critters and creatures of the ocean. While
looking into the pools, she meets a crab,
Jaiba, who takes her on a dreamlike
underwater adventure, teaches her about the
importance of shark conservation, and reveals
Meli's ultimate destiny: to become the Mother
of Sharks. (Amazon)

ONE writing activity or prompt that you could give students to engage with the text. In the spirit of social justice
integration, use the writing standard for that text to help you create an activity or prompt with a social justice theme.
