Introductory Message
Welcome to STE Electronics 10!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Iloilo City and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas
through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is
developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents, and responsible
adults) in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic
Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring lifelong learning skills, knowledge, and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Electronics Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the teaching-learning
activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with
minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will be made
available to the learners with the references/links to ease the independent
learning.

For the learner:

The Electronics Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue learning

even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you with meaningful
and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active learner, carefully
read and understand the instructions then perform the activities and answer the
assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedule.

ELECTRONICS ACTIVITY SHEET No. 1

Identifying the different electronic components and measuring instruments

I. Learning Competency
Identify the different electronic components and measuring instruments.

II. Background Information for Learners

Different electronic components are used in different devices. Electronic
components comprise resistors, transistors, capacitors, inductors, and diodes.
Each of these components has a specified function that could operate any device.
In this learning activity, you will identify the different electronic components and
measuring instruments.

III. Activity Proper.

Directions:
• Read the introduction of concepts carefully.
• Study and analyze the concepts presented.
• Perform the following activities and answer the guide questions.
• Write the answers on your answer sheet.

The following are examples of electronic components:

o Resistors
o Resistors are components that possess a value of resistance to current flow. The
higher the resistance of the resistor, the lower the current flowing in the
conductor. Figure 1 shows the schematic diagram of a resistor

Figure 1: Schematic diagram of the resistor.

o Transistors
o A transistor is a device that controls current or voltage flow and acts as a switch
or gate for electronic signals. The transistor consists of three distinct layers. The
semiconductor devices are designated as either PNP transistors or NPN
transistors according to the way they are made up.

o Capacitors
o A capacitor is an electrical component that stores electric charges. It is
composed of two conducting plates separated by an insulating material called
a dielectric. The name of the capacitor commonly comes from the type of its
dielectric. Air capacitors use air as their dielectric. Ceramic capacitors use
ceramic as their dielectrics. The figure below shows the schematic diagram of
a fixed and variable capacitor.

Figure 3: Schematic diagram of the capacitor.

o Inductors
o Inductors are electrical components designed to have a specific inductance. A
device that stores energy in a magnetic field. They are made up of conductors
coiled around a core and are classified by the type of core material—magnetic
or nonmagnetic. Figure 4 shows the symbol for inductors

Figure 4: Schematic symbol for inductors

o Diodes
o A diode is a device that allows current to move through it in one direction. The
following are the two types of diodes.
o Light-emitting diodes. The light-emitting diode or LED is one of the most popular
types of the diode. Light is produced when the current flows through a forward
bias junction. The original color for these diodes was red, but these days most
colors are available. This is achieved by using different mixes of
semiconductors on either side of the PN junction.
o Zener diode / voltage reference diode. The Zener diode is a widely used type of
diode. It is connected under reverse bias and when a certain voltage is
reached, it breaks down. A stabled voltage is produced if the current is limited
by using a resistor. Therefore, this diode is commonly used to provide a
reference voltage in regulated power supplies.

MEASURING INSTRUMENTS

Meters are devices that detect and measure the invisible action of electrons. There
are two types of meters- analog and digital. Analog uses a graduated scale with a pointer while
digital meters show reading in numbers.
An ammeter is a device used to measure current in a circuit. The reading in the
ammeter is caused by the flowing of electrons in the circuit. An ammeter is attached in series
in a circuit.
A voltmeter is an electrical component used to measure the voltage (difference of
potential) between two points in a circuit. A voltmeter can also be used as a pressure gauge

to measure the electrical pressure in a circuit. A voltmeter is attached in parallel in a circuit.
Resistance is measured with an ohmmeter. An ohmmeter is placed across the device
to measure a current flow through it. The following are schematic diagrams for a. ammeter b.
