Introductory Message
Welcome to STE Electronics 10!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Iloilo City and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas through
the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is developed to
guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents, and responsible adults) in helping the
learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring lifelong learning skills, knowledge, and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Electronics Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the teaching-learning
activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with minimal
or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner. This will be made available to
the learners with the references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The Electronics Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue learning

even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you with meaningful and
engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active learner, carefully read
and understand the instructions then perform the activities and answer the
assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedule.

ELECTRONICS ACTIVITY SHEET No. 2

Fixed and Variable Resistors

I. Learning Competency
Differentiate fixed resistor to variable resistors.

II. Background Information for Learners

Resistance is a property of all electrical components. The effects of
resistance sometimes are undesirable, and it is constructive at other times.
Resistors are electrical components manufactured to have a specific value of
resistance to the flow of current. A resistor is the commonly used electrical
component in an electric circuit. Resistors can be classified with fixed or variable
resistance values. They have a variety of shapes and sizes to meet specific circuit,
space, and operating requirements.
In this learning activity you will differentiate fixed from variable resistors.

III. Activity Proper

Directions:
• Read the introduction of concepts carefully.
• Study and analyze the concepts presented.
• Perform the following activities and answer the guide questions.

A resistor consists of resistance elements which can be made from

different substances. Resistors are classified into two categories, the fixed resistor,
and variable resistor. Fixed resistors have designated resistance value and it
cannot be changed. There are several types of fixed resistor. The most common
type is the carbon composition resistor that used color coding in determining its
value. Other examples include the metal film and wire-wound resistors.

Carbon composition resistor is the

commonly used resistor in electronic circuits. It is
manufactured in standard resistor values.

Figure 1: Carbon composition resistor

Metal film have become popular because

they offer the small size of the composition resistor with
the accuracy of the wirewound resistor. A thin film of
carbon is deposited on a cylindrical ceramic core and
sealed in an epoxy or glass coating to form a carbon film
resistor.
Figure 2: Metal Film Resistor
Wire-wound resistors are constructed
out of a nickel-chromium alloy (nichrome) wire
wound on a ceramic form. Leads are connected and
the entire resistor is sealed with a coating. Wire-
wound resistors are components that are used in
high‑current circuits where precision is required.
The resistance range differs from a fraction of an
ohm to several thousand ohms. Figure 3: Wirewound Resistor

On the other hand, variable resistors allow the resistance to vary. Variable
resistors include potentiometers which vary their resistance value due to variation
in voltage. A rheostat is another resistor that varies its resistance due to variations
in current.
Other special nonlinear types of resistors include a thermistor, which is
temperature-sensitive; varistor or voltage-dependent resistor (VDR), which is
voltage-sensitive; and the photoresistor or light-dependent resistor (LDR), which is
light sensitive.

Copy and complete the Venn Diagram below to differentiate the fixed resistor
from variable resistor. Write your answer on your answer sheet.
