What do you know about seaweed?

They are not seaweed, but seagrass


(lamun).
Clasification

Broad groups based on pigmentation:

Uses of Seaweed: an overview

Seaweed consumption
in China, Japan, South
Korea is the largest over
the world.
Uses of Seaweed: an overview

§ China à the largest producer of edible seaweeds, harvesting about 5


million wet tonnes. Most seaweed is for kombu, made from brown
seaweed (Laminaria japonica).
§ Korea à grows about 800.000 wet tonnes, about 50% of this is for
wakame.
§ Japan production à about 600.00 wet tonnes, and 75% of this is for
nori, the thin dark seaweed wrapped around a rice ball in sushi.
§ Various seaweeds are used to produce three hydrocolloids: agar,
alginate, and carrageenan.
§ These hydrocolloids are water-soluble carbohydrate, and widely used
in food products as thickening agent and stabilizer.

Seaweed in Indonesia

An archipelago country, Indonesia is


endowed with a tremendous diversity
including in maritime sector. With 17.504
islands and coastline of 81.000 km,
Indonesia have a great potential as the
largest seaweed producers over the world.
Currently, with total of potential area for
seaweed cultivation 769.452 ha, only 50%
of this is utilized.

What are seaweed-based
foods in Indonesia?
Is it only for food?
Of course, not
“Sargalizer”
Sargalizer, a fertilizer made from
brown seaweed, Sargassum sp. It
contains some growth hormones such
as auxin and giberelin.
