INTRODUCTION
❖ ADS-B is a system used to track airplanes in the sky

❖ It’s stand for Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast

❖ Automatic because he doesn’t require any work from the pilot or the air traffic controller

❖ It’s Dependent because it depend on gathering data, such as position and altitude from the airplane’s GPS

❖ Surveillance because it help the controllers to tracks airplanes in the sky

❖ The information is Broadcast for continual monitoring

HOW DOES ADS-B WORK ?

❑ ADS-B uses an equipment on an airplanes to transmit information. Most of airplanes are equipped with
and ADS-B transponder. This device broadcasts the precise location of the aircraft every half-second.

❑ ADS-B ground stations capture this information and share it with the air traffic controllers: It’s terrestrial
ADS-B. Other airplanes in the sky can also receive this information.

❑ An airplane still needs an unobstructed line of sight measuring less than 463 km to send its signal to
the ground station. This can be a problem around mountain ranges, or far offshore. This is where
Space-based ADS-B come in.

❑ An ADS-B receiver on board a satellite captures airplane broadcasts and relays them to Aireon ground
stations. This allow for global coverage. Aireon shares this data with air traffic controllers.

❑ Aireon is a company that develop a system carried by Irridium NEXT satellites, a series of satellites
circling the Earth

COMPONENTS OF ADS-B
Space-Based ADS-B
✓ The space segment utilizes Iridium’s constellation of
66 satellites, distributed in six polar orbital planes,
and equipped with ADS-B receiver 1090 ES (1090
MHZ Extended Squitter).
✓ The ground segment is comprised of the Hosted
Payload Operations Center (HPOC), the Aireon
Processing and Distribution (APD) center and the
Service Delivery Point (SDP).

BENEFITS OF ADS-B
❑ Global coverage of 70 percent of the Mondial air space (Space-based ADS-B) ;

❑ It’s cheap and handy ;

❑ The position of airplane that we track is known at every moment ;

❑ No line-of-sight obstructions (Space-based ADS-B) ;

❑ Increased Safety : By providing real-time updates and accurate aircraft positioning, ADS-B can help
prevent mid-air collisions and increase overall flight safety;

❑ Enhanced Surveillance : ADS-B provides real-time and more accurate information about aircraft
position, enhancing air traffic control and aircraft situational awareness ;

ADS-B VS TRADITIONAL RADAR

Traditional Radar ADS-B

✓ Track aircraft by reflecting ✓ Actively transmits aircraft position

transmitted radar waves. data to the surrounding
✓ Short coverage ranges compared to environment.
ADS-B, especially in remote or ✓ It provides real-time updates on an
mountainous regions aircraft’s position with high
✓ Location of the aircraft is known accuracy (0.5 second).
every 4 second ✓ ADS-B has a broader reach as it
relies on ground stations and
satellite technology

GLOBAL ADOPTION OF ADS-B

❑ Worldwide Incorporation: ADS-B is a key part of the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO)
approved aviation surveillance technologies and is being progressively incorporated into national
airspaces worldwide.
❑ Mandatory Equipment: ADS-B equipment is mandatory for instrument flight rules (IFR) category
aircraft in Australian airspace; the United States has required many aircraft to be so equipped since
January 2020; and, the equipment has been mandatory for some aircraft in Europe since 2017.
❑ AFI region : several terrestrial ADS-B deployment programs are completed or underway in the
following states : Ethiopia, Tanzania, FIR Roberts (Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia), Sudan, Namibia,
Kenya and 17 ASECNA member states since 2019. ASECNA has deploy space-based ADS-B across its
entire space from 2020.
❑ Remote Regions: Canada uses ADS-B for surveillance in remote regions not covered by traditional
radar (areas around Hudson Bay, the Labrador Sea, Davis Strait, Baffin Bay and southern Greenland)
since January 15, 2009.
❑ Future Trend: The trend is for full adoption of ADS-B as it provides more accurate and real-time
tracking of aircraft positions, allowing for safer and more efficient routing of flights

CHALLENGES AND LIMITATION

❑ Message Collisions : In dense airspaces, the ADS-B system can experience severe
message collisions, leading to packet error rates above 50%.

❑ Human Factors : Incorrect setting of a cockpit instrument or mishearing an air traffic

control (ATC) transmission can lead to issues with ADS-B equipment.

❑ Susceptibility to Interference : ADS-B is susceptible to interference, which can

affect its performance.

❑ Implementation Challenges : There are several challenges to implementing ADS-B

reliably, including the pace of equipage and deriving actual benefits from equipping.

FUTURE OF ADS-B
❑ Increased Adoption : ADS-B is poised to become even more integral to air traffic management
systems worldwide. As more aircraft integrate with ADS-B transponders, the coverage and
reliability of surveillance data will continue to improve

❑ Space-Based ADS-B : Companies have deployed satellite networks equipped with ADS-B
receivers, providing global coverage and real-time tracking of aircraft positions.

❑ New Applications : Future applications of ADS-B include support for new entrants like
commercial space and RPAS operations, interval management, and providing aircraft-reported
weather information

❑ Improved Traffic Management : With more accurate tracking, ADS-B allows for more efficient
routing and scheduling, saving time and reducing fuel consumption.

CONCLUSION
01 ADS-B is a system used to track airplanes in the sky every half second.

It use equipment such as transponder and GPS in the airplane and 1090 ES receiver in receiver
02 station, which could be based in space or in the ground.

ADS-B present many advantage such as a good coverage of Mondial air space (70%) and is
03 more useful than the traditional radar on several points.

ADS-B have been approved as aviation surveillance technologies by ICAO and is become a
04 standard in many region around the world (AFI, USA, Europe) from 2020.

Despite several limitations is poised to become even more integral to air traffic management
05 systems worldwide
