PRIVATE PROPERTY.
No entry by order of
Sinclair Research Corporation.
Trespassers will be prosecuted.
Area Closed.
Danger - No Trespassing.
BY ORDER OF FLORIDA PARKS AND WILDLIFE.
They passed beyond the sign, ignoring it. Neither of the men in
the truck had any clue what danger the sign might refer to, but they
paid it no heed. The waterhole would be as safe today as it had been
on the four or five other times they had ventured up here. Carl
wondered if the park rangers even remembered why they had closed
the area in the first place, it had been so long.
Bureaucracy.
He snorted and shook his head, turning his attention back to the
road ahead. That was the real danger. The final part of the trail was
treacherous, with a series of switchbacks that could result in a nasty
encounter with a tree if you weren’t careful.
“We’re almost there,” Carl said, glancing sideways at his younger
brother, Ray, before turning his attention back to the road ahead.
“Huh?” Ray was still distracted.
“I said, we’re almost there,” Carl repeated, swatting at Ray’s
hand. “For pity’s sake, would you quit it?”
“What?”
“Fiddling with that damned radio.”
“What’s your problem?” Ray flipped the radio off and pushed his
hands deep into his pockets.
“It’s annoying, that’s my problem,” Carl grumbled.
“Can’t you get a decent radio in this thing? You don’t even have a
CD player, let alone MP3 or Bluetooth,” replied Ray. “Even my truck
has a CD player, and I’ve had that thing for years.”
“It is what it is.”
“Satellite radio would be nice,” Ray added.
“Yeah, well, if you’re so damned unhappy riding with me, why
didn’t you drive?”
“Because I drove last time,” Ray replied. “Besides, these trails kill
my tires.”
“And they don’t ruin mine?” Carl eased up on the gas. They were
coming to the narrowest part of the road where it thinned to barely
the width of the vehicle. This was the hardest part of the trail, and if
they were going to run into a problem, this was where it would be.
The dirt road made a sudden left turn and sloped dramatically. Carl
took a deep breath. Twice before they had gotten this far and found
the mud too slick, and he really hated it when they were forced to
turn back. Today though, the truck handled the incline with ease.
From here on in, it was plain sailing.
“Weather service said there could be heavy rain tonight. We
should camp on high ground. We don’t want to get washed out.”
“We’ll pitch the tent on the bluff like last time.” Carl said as the
trail made a final turn to the right before opening up into the clearing.
They had been coming up to the waterhole for years. A tradition
started by their father when they were boys. Now, as usual, the view
as they came around that last bend made Carl’s heart leap. The
black mood eased.
Trees crowded the edge of the space, their branches reaching
into the small oasis of sunlight like arms stretching toward the sun.
On the left side of the open space, the ground was considerably
higher. An old fire pit, still partially visible even after four months,
marked the spot where the two had camped the last time they
visited. In the center of the clearing, surrounded on one side by a
rocky outcrop and on the other by a gently sloping shelf of sand, was
a perfectly round hole in the ground filled with crystal clear spring
water.
Carl brought the truck to a stop. A tingle of excitement coursed
up his spine. “Looks good.”
“Yeah. Water level looks high too.” Ray flipped off his seat belt.
“That’s good.”
“Want to get a dive in before we pitch the tents?”
“Hell, yeah,” Carl said. “We’ve still got a few hours of daylight left;
might as well use them.” For the first time since they had left Tampa,
Carl forgot about his boss and his worries of unemployment. All that
mattered today was the water and the caves that waited to be
explored within.
