Welcome to Mathematics 5 Self-Learning Module. This
module offers engaging and purposeful activities to facilitate both
guided and independent learning, allowing you to progress at
your preferred pace and convenience. Through this module, you'll
have the chance to absorb the learning material actively,
fostering a deeper understanding as you participate in the
learning process.

The component of this module includes:

A. Objective: This outline what knowledge you will gain

upon completing the lessons in the module.

B. Review: This section assesses the learnings and

skills you have acquired from the previous lesson.

C. Lesson: This segment delves into the topic covered in

this module.

D. Learning Tasks: These are a series of tasks you will

undertake.

E. Application: This section examines the integration of

values in the learning competency.

F. Summary: This part provides a summary of the

concepts and applications covered in the lessons.
Self-Learning Module

G. Evaluation: This evaluates how much you have

learned from the entire module.

Lesson 1: Visualizing Percent and its

Relationship to Fractions, Ratios, and
Decimal Numbers

Objective

After going through this module, you are expected to visualize percent and
its relationship to fractions, ratios, and decimal numbers using models.

Review

Direction: Determine if the provided scenario exhibits a direct proportion or

not.
1. The number of notebooks you buy and the price you pay.
2. The number of hours your father work and the pay he earn.
3. The number of motorcycle and tricycle that pass by in the street.
4. The number of eggs to the number of feeding beneficiaries.
5. Five hot foods cost Php25.00 and eight ice candy cost Php40.00.

Lesson

Have you come across the term "percent" before? Where is the symbol (%)
commonly found?

Percent means “per hundred” or “for every hundred”. It comes from the
Latin words per and centum. The symbol used is (%).

Percent can be expressed as a decimal, a fraction, and a ratio.

Percent can be expressed as a fraction whose denominator is 100 or in

simplest/lowest term.

Percent is a ratio that compares a number to 100.

Self-Learning Module

Try to discover.

How many boys are there? (There are 57 boys.)

How many are girls? (There are 43 girls.)
How many children are there in all? (There are 100 children.)

In the provided illustration, it shows 100%. Among the children, boys make
up 57%, while girls constitute 43%.

Percent can be represented as a fraction. The fractional part of the boys is

57/100 , while girls are 43/100.

Let's delve deeper into this!

Self-Learning Module

1. How many square grids are there in all? (The grid is composed of 100
small squares. It is also used to illustrate percent.)
2. What percent is shaded blue? (65%)
3. What percent is shaded gray? (15%)
4. What percent is the remaining unshaded parts? (20%)
5. What percent is the combined shaded parts? (70%)

A percent is a ratio whose denominator is 100. Percent is another way of

saying hundredth or in a hundred.

We read 65% as sixty-five hundredths or sixty-five in a hundred.

15% as fifteen hundredths or fifteen in a hundred
20% as twenty hundredths or twenty in a hundred

Please examine the figure on the left.

There are 31 squares that are shaded.
This can be written as follows:

Percent Fraction Decimal Ratio

31% 31/100 0.31 31:100

The symbol “31 %” is read as thirty-one percent.

In fraction, it is 31/100 and is written in decimal

form as 0.31.

Both fraction and decimal are read as “thirty-one hundredths” which means
31 out of 100.

Learning Tasks

5. ____________ ___________

Application

Holy week is coming, and your family is planning to visit your

grandparents in Rizal. You went to the mall with your mother to buy a
luggage. On the first store, she was offered half the price less, while other
store offers 60% off on the same brand of luggage with the same original
price.
