How Uber in Bangladesh

losing its credibility as a
hassle-free service

Riddled with complaints of harassment from commuters the

Uber ride sharing in Bangladesh is taking a hit in its
reputation as a comfortable service with a reasonable fare.

Issues like failure to pick up passengers timely, transferring

the passengers to other vehicles, multiple cancellations of
rides, exorbitant fares and not accepting bkash payments are
forcing many regular users to abandon it.

In particular, passengers using Uber have identified trip

cancellation and confirmation of new rides without
completing the existing ones as two of the main problems
that are plaguing the service. 

On September 16, this correspondent called for an Uber ride

to go from Baridhara J Block to Badda. The trip got cancelled

three times, and Uber charged Tk 30 from this

correspondent’s bkash account without providing any
service.
Jannatul Begum, a private company employee, had to go
through the same ordeal last month. One morning, she
called for an Uber ride to go from Bashundhara to Paltan.
Her trip also got cancelled twice. The first driver had
accepted her ride request but informed 30 minutes later that
the trip has been cancelled due to gas shortage.

The first driver then transferred Jannatul’s ride request to a

second driver, who after taking 20 minutes informed her
that he too won’t be able to make the ride. The office goer
then had to make the trip riding on a CNG-run three-
wheeler.

“I would’ve managed some other vehicle if I had known

that my trip will be cancelled after confirmation. Besides,
fare of an Uber trip from Bashundhara to Baitul Mukarram
in Paltan is around Tk 800-900, which is very high compared
to other types of rides. That’s why I’ve stopped using Uber,”
Jannatul said.

Mehedi Hasan had been a regular user of the Uber service

before he stopped it recently. While talking to UNB, he
discussed some issues which are behind the gradual decline
of the ride sharing service.

“Nowadays, passengers can’t find Uber rides when it’s

needed. Drivers also don’t want to make the trips if they
don’t like the destination. Fares have also multiplied, and
the drivers are unwilling to accept bkash payments though
Uber has added this as an option. Such are the hazards of
riding with Uber nowadays,” Mehedi said.

Asked about these issues with Uber, Bangladesh Road

Transport Authority (BRTA) Chairman Nur Mohammad
Majumder told UNB that they’ll look into the complaints
made against Uber and take legal steps if any passenger is
found to have been harassed.

“We’d permitted Uber to operate here with a view to ease

the commuting process of the passengers. In order to keep
its operation running, Uber has to provide services
considering the best interests of the passengers. There are
certain conditions that Uber has to follow, and one of them
is preventing the harassment of passengers at any cost,” said
Nur.

About the sky-high rates of fares, the BRTA chairman added

that another condition that Uber must follow is to keep the

fare reasonable.
“Uber has to fix the fares considering the present situation
on the ground. We’ll definitely fine Uber if we receive
complains of charging excessive fares,” Nur added.

Contacted by UNB through its public relations organisation

in Bangladesh, Benchmark PR, Uber acknowledged the
issues.

“Long waits and driver cancelling trips fall short of our

promise to deliver a magical experience to riders. We are
working hard to address this and have launched a slew of
new features for driver partners” it said

It further said, “to remove frustration for riders and drivers

alike, we now show trip destinations to drivers upfront
before they decide to accept the ride. We are also showing
drivers the mode of payment (cash or online) before the trip
starts. In case of any concerns while using our platform, we
also encourage our users to raise complaints through the
app for timely and efficient resolution.”

The billboard industry in Bangladesh has been neglected

over the period despite its ‘huge contribution’ to the
national economy, according to a business leader in this
sector.

'Outdoor advertising is very important, along with print and

electronic media, for marketing and promotion. Although
the value of this industry has increased worldwide, it has
not been properly evaluated in the country,” said Liaquat
Ali Khan Mukul, advisor at the Bangladesh Billboard
Advertising Owners Association (BBAO).

The trade forum organised the discussion meeting on

‘Development and expansion of the billboard industry in
smart Bangladesh’ at a city hotel.

BBAO former president Haji Mohammad Rashed presided

over the session.

Addressing the programme as chief guest, Rupayan Group

Chairman Liaquat Ali Khan Mukul termed the billboard
business ‘an art’.

“We make art with an artist's mind. This industry has made
a lot of contribution to the growth of the GDP of the
country. We have to unite ourselves for further
development and expansion of the billboard industry. That
is why it is very important to institutionalise this
organisation along with competent leadership,” he said.

The Rupayan Group chief announced a free 1,000-square-

foot space for the BBAO office in Paltan, considering the
benefits to the members.

World’s largest pvt firms fail

to set climate targets
AFP, Paris
     

Publish: Tuesday, 23 April, 2024 10:35

Only 40 of the world's 100 largest private firms have set net-
zero carbon emissions targets to fight climate change,
according to a report released Monday, lagging far behind
public companies.

But for the world to meet the 2015 Paris Agreement to limit
global warming 1.5 degree Celsius, all companies need to
reduce their planet-heating emissions, the report by the
group Net Zero Tracker noted.

The lack of market and reputational pressures on private

firms compared to those publicly-listed, along with an
absence of regulation are to blame for their slow uptake of

https://www.daily-sun.com/post/647053 6/12

climate commitments, John Lange of Net Zero Tracker told

AFP.

"I think things are changing on all three of those fronts," he

added.
The report compared 200 of the world's largest public and
private companies based on their reported emissions
reductions strategies and net-zero targets.

It found that only 40 of the 100 private firms assessed had

net zero targets, compared to 70 of 100 publicly-listed
companies.

Of the private companies that have set targets, just eight

have published plans on how they will meet them.

"A pledge without a plan is not a pledge, it is a naked PR

stunt," the report said.

Only two firms -- furnishing giant Ikea and US engineering

giant Bechtel -- ruled out using controversial carbon credits
to achieve their net-zero goals, the report said.

Carbon credits allow businesses to offset their emissions by

directing money toward a project that reduces or avoids
emissions, such as protecting forests, but critics say they
allow companies to keep polluting.

Meanwhile, none of the eight fossil fuel companies included

in the report was found to have a net-zero target, compared
with 76 percent of the sector's largest public firms.

There was also little improvement in the figures compared

with a previous analysis done in 2022, "despite a massive
uptick in regulation around the world", Lang said.

Several jurisdictions including the United Kingdom have

adopted climate disclosure regulations.

Others have regulations on the horizon, with business hubs

of California and Singapore requiring greenhouse gas
emissions reporting from 2027.

The European Union also introduced two climate

regulations -- the Corporate Sustainability Reporting
Directive (CSRD) and the Corporate Sustainability Due
Diligence Directive (CSDDD) -- which will soon require
thousands of large companies to report their climate impacts
and emissions, and to take action to curtail them.

https://www.daily-sun.com/post/647053 7/12
31/05/2024, 16:27 How Uber in Bangladesh losing its credibility as a hassle-free service

"We're trying to get private firms to understand what's

coming for them," Lang said.

The EU policies will have far-reaching effects in particular,

targeting firms not only based in the bloc but those that may
be headquartered elsewhere with branches or subsidiaries
within the member states.
Yet two European private firms, including French
hypermarket chain E. Leclerc, were singled out in the report
for having set any emissions reduction targets.

E.Leclerc told AFP that the company has made efforts

toward more sustainable practises like eliminating the use of
single-use plastic bags, and is "committed to setting near-
term company-wide emissions reduction targets".

But with the enforcement of EU regulations looming, firms

will not be able to "dodge" climate targets much longer,
Sybrig Smit of the NewClimate Institute told AFP.

"It's actually quite watertight. If companies want to do

business in Europe, they are going to have to face the
consequences," she said.

The firms analysed account for roughly 23 percent of the

global economy, with the majority based in either China, the
United States or EU states -- the biggest emitters of
greenhouse gases, Lang said.

Any changes the firms make to meet new regulations will

have substantial benefits for the environment.

"They have such a trickledown effect. Whenever such a big

company is implementing something real, it will have a
huge effect on the rest of the sector that they operate in,"
Smit said.
