Cause
Computer name was changed.
Domain was changed.
Multiple machines/users are remoting into the same user through Windows Remote
Desktop Connection at the same time.
System was converted to a virtual machine.
The system is not in the FactoryTalk Directory

Solution
Note: Prior to performing these steps, verify that the FactoryTalk Network Directory
Machine is accessible. If the computer that has Studio 5000 Logix Designer / RSLogix
5000 installed is the FactoryTalk Network Directory Server, verify that it shows localhost
or remote shows the Computer Name or IP Address of the remote machine:
In Windows 7 verify in Start-->Programs-->Rockwell Software-->FactoryTalk Tools--
>Specify FactoryTalk Directory Location,
In Windows 10 verify by typing Specify FactoryTalk Directory Location into Menu
Start/

Login to the local computer as an Administrator. Your administrator's account must have
a password already set.

Solution 1
Follow this solution if the computer name has been changed or the user is unable to login
with current Windows credentials:

1. 1 From the local computer, go FactoryTalk Directory Configuration Wizard:

on Windows 7 go to Start--> Programs--> Rockwell Software--> FactoryTalk

Administration Console,
on Windows 10 type FactoryTalk Administration Console on Start Menu .

1. 3 Enter your local Windows Admin User credentials and press Next.
Note: To check what is the Windows user name you are logged in with, please
follow QA42771 - How to see the current logged in Windows user name

The software should start without seeing the Log on to FactoryTalk prompt. If it is still
starting with the prompt run software as administrator. In some cases, even after going
through FactoryTalk Directory Configuration Wizard, the Log on to FactoryTalk window
still shows up and it does not allow you to login even when using computer admin
username and password.

To resolve it:
1. Open FactoryTalk Administration Console.

This will help with resolving the issue with Log On to FactoryTalk prompt.

Solution 2

computer, OR if the desired user is not a PC administrator:
1. Go to FactoryTalk Administration Console:
on Windows 7 go to Start--> Programs--> Rockwell Software--> FactoryTalk
Administration Console,
on Windows 10 type FactoryTalk Administration Console on Start Menu.

3. To allow access for a particular user, navigate to Network--> System--> Users and
Groups. Right-click on Users and choose New-->Windows Linked User.
4. Click Add and provide the domain\logon name for the desired user. You can click
Check Names to verify that the name was found.
5. Navigate to Network--> System--> Users and Groups. Right-click on User Groups and
choose New-->Windows Linked User Group.
6. Click Add.
7. Type the name of the user group as authenticated users.
8. Click OK.

Solution 3
Follow this step if the Windows user does not have local admin rights or sufficient
privileges to open FactoryTalk Directory Configuration Wizard:
1. Go to FactoryTalk Administration Console:
For Windows 7 go to Start--> Programs--> Rockwell Software--> FactoryTalk
Administration Console,
for Windows 10 type FactoryTalk Administration Console on Start Menu

Solution 5
Follow this step if you are working with a Hyper-V virtual machine:

1. In the Virtual Machine Connection window, click on View and uncheck Enhanced
Session button.
2. Log out from your account inside the VM, and log back in.
3. If it's necessary to have the Enhanced Session activated, follow the steps described
in Step 4 to change the computer name identification.
4. Re-enable Enhanced Session.

Solution 6
Follow this step if you have full administrator privileges, however for some reason when
configuring Network Directory in FactoryTalk Directory Configuration Wizard it tells you
that the user is not FactoryTalk Administrator
1. Go to Control Panel --> Programs and Features
2. Repair FactoryTalk Services Platform

3. Reboot computer

Additional Notes:
To correct this issue, assign a password to the local administrator's account. Now, with a
password, users should be able to successfully run the FactoryTalk Directory
Configuration Wizard.
1. If Use single sign-on is set to Disable in FactoryTalk software, then Log On to
FactoryTalk dialog box will be displayed each time RSLogix 5000 software is
launched. Proper user credentials must be entered in order to continue. (By default,
Use single sign-on is set to Enable). Refer to QA22985 - FactoryTalk Security: How to
enable Single Sign-On for detail.
2. An initial FactoryTalk lockout can happen if the Microsoft Windows login is:

USERNAME = Administrator or other Admin account

PASSWORD = Blank meaning one does not exist
3. In some cases using the Remote Desktop client from Microsoft Store (Windows 10
only) on computers which are connected to a domain may cause the prompt to come
up - this is because the UWP client sometimes appends DNS suffix to the end of the
computer name. If such PC name is not present in FactoryTalk Directory, it will trigger
the login prompt. Whenever possible, please use the classic Remote Desktop client.

RSLogix 5000 version 20.00 software enables FactoryTalk Security by

default
When launching RSLogix 5000 software, Log On to FactoryTalk dialog box may be
displayed. This dialog box may be seen when you do not have Administrator privileges on
the personal computer and the current user does not exist in the FactoryTalk directory. If
this dialog box is cancelled, the RSLogix 5000 software will not be launched. When the
dialog box is displayed, entering the credentials for a user that exists in the FactoryTalk
Directory will allow RSLogix 5000 software to be launched. Administrator accounts are
included in the FactoryTalk Directory by default.

There maybe certain configurations where the installed Rockwell Software packages do
not require the FactoryTalk Service Platform as a prerequisite.

For example, if only RSLogix 5000 and RSLinx Classic software installed and FactoryTalk
security isn't required, the user can remove the FactoryTalk Service Platform from the
Windows Add/Remove Programs list. Afterwards the ability to configure security in
RSLogix 5000 is disabled. Similar to RSLogix 5000 version 19 and prior when security is
not enabled.
