An interview was conducted with Ahmad Rufai, the Vice Chairman of Koro
Afoju. He expressed gratitude for the government's assistance in providing
interlocking blocks, noting significant improvements resulting from this
support. However, he emphasized the ongoing need for government
intervention, particularly in the renovation of houses, as many residents are
visually impaired. There is a plea for assistance in this regard to ensure the
living conditions are suitable for all community members.
Additionally, there is a strong desire for educational opportunities for the less
privileged within the community. Despite the challenges faced by visually
impaired parents, there is a call for a school to be established to cater to the
educational needs of their children. Education is seen as a fundamental right
that should not be denied to any child, regardless of their parents' visual
impairments.
A key concern raised by Ahmad Rufai is the issue of cleanliness within the
community. He highlighted the negligence of some residents towards their
health and the environment. Despite previous efforts by community developers
to address this issue, including advising residents on cleanliness, little progress
has been made. It was noted that while some residents are visually impaired,
their sighted family members could play a role in maintaining cleanliness within
the community.
So, we also took steps to advise and engage the residents in a meeting to
emphasize the significance of health and cleanliness. We made sure to convey to
them that their circumstances shouldn't define them, and they must prioritize
taking care of themselves and maintaining a clean environment. To support this
initiative, we provided essential cleaning supplies such as brooms, soaps,
disinfectants, waste bins, and other necessary items.
