Lab Session 08
One Dimensional Heat Conduction through a Bar

Objective:

To find out the heat conducted through a rectangular bar subject to temperature difference using
the Thermal Analysis module in ANSYS Workbench

Problem Statement:
A steel bar is subjected to thermal temperature condition of 1000 degrees Celsius at one end.
Calculate the flow of temperature through the bar with the initial condition of room
temperature (22 degrees Celsius). Also, find out the heat flow through the bar using ANSYS
Thermal Analysis Module and verify the results with your hand calculations.

Input Data:

Design a rectangular bar of 1x1 meter square cross-section and a length of 5 meters.
Thermal conductivity of the Bar is assumed to be 10 Wm-1 oC-1.

Assumptions:

We assumed that the bar is made up of an isotropic material and there is no convection or
radiation taking place.

Procedure:

1. Firstly, start with ANSYS Thermal Analysis.

2. Define the bars’ material and specify its properties.
3. Open the Design Modeler Geometry Editor and create a rectangular bar with the
given dimensions.
4. Then go into meshing and define the mesh.
5. In the boundary conditions, define the initial conditions in the form of standard
temperature.
6. Define the temperature boundary conditions and heat flows accordingly for the
analysis.
7. Set the required solution options.
8. Then in numerical results, we obtained temperature contours, and heat flux from it.
9. Then evaluate the results with the help of tabular data and graphs/contours.

Analytical Solution:
1) Steady State Thermal Analysis:
Open a new project in ANSYS Workbench. From the toolbox, drag and drop the "Steady State " system onto
the Project Schematic window.

Engineering Data:

Double-clicking "Engineering Data" in the Static Structural system will launch the material library. Type
"SmCo24 and Stainless Steel" into the Engineering Data window search field.

Geometry:
Double-clicking the "Geometry" cell in the Steady State Thermal will launch the geometry tool. Here, sketch
up the object as indicated below, taking note of its measurements.

Meshing:
Double-clicking the "Model" cell in the Steady State Thermal system will launch the model tool. Assign the material
first, as shown below.

Apply Condition:
After that select steady state thermal and put temperature 1 is 1000C and temperature 2 is 22C and then apply the heat flow
condition.
