‘The entrance to my joys’
Raptus in Contemplative Devotion
I want to count him blessed and holy to whom such rapture has been
vouchsafed in this mortal life … as if you were emptied and lost and
swallowed up in God.

Whatever else the world’s mystics do with language, they do not, as a rule,
merely negate it … they utilize language to convey meaning(s) and
content(s) in a variety of amazingly imaginative ways. It is, indeed, their
success at just this sort of substantive communication that allows us to
speak of, to learn of, and to participate in mystical traditions at all.5
Understanding Raptus
The fourteenth century was an important hundred years for Middle
English writing in general and works of contemplation in particular,
as several influential texts appeared that would shape much of the
contemplative thought of late medieval and early modern England.
Alongside the literary achievements of Geoffrey Chaucer, John
Gower, and the Pearl Poet, classics of medieval spirituality in Middle
English began to appear. In this section, we examine three of the
more significant of these works and the different ways they
approached contemplative devotion and the notion of divine raptus.
One of the earliest Middle English contemplatives that drew
directly from Richard’s theology was the hermit of Hampole, Richard
Rolle (d.1349). Born to Yorkshire farmers, Rolle seems to have
rejected the opportunities of social-climbing offered to him, as he
never held a clerical office nor participated in civil society. Early in
life, he was blessed by Thomas de Neville, archdeacon of Durham
Cathedral, with an education at Oxford.21 Rolle, however, rejected a
future in the ecclesiastical hierarchy, retreating to a hermitage near a
Cistercian house outside Hampole. We can only speculate as to what
drove Rolle into such seclusion. Even in a period when the
Franciscan call to poverty and purity reached across Europe, Rolle’s
decades-long isolation was unusual. Despite what little we know of
Rolle’s life, the large hoard of his surviving manuscripts—from
meditations on the Passion and accounts of his own contemplative
experiences to theological treatises and biblical commentaries—
speak volumes about his prodigious mind.22 His most popular book,
the Incendium Amoris (Fire of Love) survives in over forty medieval
manuscripts, and it was among the very few contemplative texts
‘utilized in the Counter-Reformation’.23
Part of the Incendium’s success is due to Rolle’s intimate prose
and the powerful metaphors he fashioned to explore the contours of
his experience with God. Comparing divine love to both a melody
and a fire (two things capable of surrounding and immersing a
person’s perceptions), Rolle described raptus as:
The very fervor of their sweet love ravishes them with the sight of their
Beloved. Flowering through this loving flame into all virtue they rejoice in
their Maker. Their mind is changed and passes into lasting melody. From
now on their meditations become song. Melancholy has been driven out of
the mansion of their spirit, and it now resounds with wondrous melody.24
