I. Introduction
This module is about Contemporary Arts refers to art made and produced by artists living today.
Today’s artists work in and respond to a global environment that is culturally diverse,
technologically advancing, and multifaceted. Working in a wide range of mediums,
contemporary artists often reflect and comment on modern-day society
II. Content Standards
Demonstrates appreciation of contemporary art forms, found in the various regions by
understanding the elements and principles.
III. Performance Standards
Presents a form of integrated contemporary art based on the region of his / her choice. e.g.
choreography, musical instrument, literary and music composition, visual design, and/or
theatrical performance

After studying this module, you should be able to:

negotiate the actual aesthetic breakaway from the established canon to the abstract, expressionist,
symbolist and other modes of creative expression characteristic of the art of the modern world.
Contemporary artists working within the postmodern movement reject the concept of
mainstream art and embrace the notion of “artistic pluralism,” the acceptance of a variety of
artistic intentions and styles. Whether influenced by or grounded in performance art, pop art,
Minimalism, conceptual art, or video, contemporary artists pull from an infinite variety of
materials, sources, and styles to create art. For this reason, it is difficult to briefly summarize and
accurately reflect the complexity of concepts and materials used by contemporary artists. This
overview highlights a few of the contemporary artists whose work is on view at the Getty
Museum and the concepts they explore in their work.
PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
1. BALANCE
It is distribution of interest or visual weight in a work. Balance has
three types namely asymmetric, symmetric and radial or random.
2. CONTRAST
The difference in quality between two instances of an
art elements, or using opposing qualities next to
each other. Like for example, white-black, rough-
smooth.

5. MOVEMENT
Using art elements to direct a viewers’ eye along a path
through the artwork, and/or to show movement, action and direction.
Also, giving some elements the ability to be moved or move on
their own, via internal or external power.

blending of post-modern and modern arts. There are many art forms which are until now applied
by different artist. Some of the techniques have remained and some were being modified.

2. SHAPE
This is an enclosed space defined by line or by contrast to its surroundings.
3. FORM
It is a three-dimensional object defined by a volume of shape.
4. SPACE
Refers to the area within, around, above or below an object or objects. It is important to creating
and understanding both two dimensional or three-dimensional works of art.
5. COLOR
Visual perception that allow a person to differentiate objects due
to the way various wavelength of light are reflected; can
communicate information and emotion to the viewer.

5.1 Hue – It is the name of the colors. (Red, Green, Blue, etc.)
5.2 Intensity/ Saturation - The Purity of the color. (brightness or dullness) for example,
pure red is bright; red mixed with green becomes less intense (more neutral)
5.3 Value/Brightness- The lightness or darkness of the color. This can be used to depict and
shadow on a color and help show volume/form.
6. VALUE
The lightness or darkness of tones or colors.
7. TEXTURE
Tactile sensation or feel of a surface (rough, smooth, spiky, etc.) or how something appeals to
feel.
8. PERSPECTIVE
This is the viewers perspective on a certain arts and design. There are tree types of perspective-
bird’s eye view, worm’s eye view and the eye level view.

Water Color Painting increased and the subject matter of paintings began to include
landscapes, Filipino inhabitants, Philippine fashion, and government officials.
Portrait Paintings featured the painters themselves, Filipino jewelry, and native
furniture.
Landscape Paintings featured artists' names painted ornately as well as day-to-day
scenes of average Filipinos partaking in their daily tasks.
During World War II, some painters focused their artwork on the effects of war, including battle
scenes, destruction, and the suffering of the Filipino people.

FILIPINO DANCE - Philippine dance has played a tremendous role in Filipino culture.
From one of the oldest dated dances to other folkloric dances.
CORDILLERA a name given by the Spanish Conquistadors when they first saw the
mountain ranges. Meaning "knotted rope", the Spanish term refers to the jumbled rolls
and dips of this long-range traversing the northern part of Luzon Island.
1. Banga - illustrates the grace and strength of women in the Kalinga tribe. Women
performing the Banga balance heavy pots on their heads while dancing to beat of
wind chimes.
5. Salisid - is the dance to show courtship. In Salisid dance, a male and a female
performer represent a rooster attempting to attract a hen.

The woman then balances several clay pots on her head and follows the man, an
action expressing submission. The man's actions resemble those of a courting
rooster.
TRIBAL DANCE includes the repertory of sacred and secular traditional dances of
the Philippines, notable for its combination of grace and vigor.
1. Malakas at Maganda - is a national folklore dance. It tells the story of the origin
of the Filipino people on the islands.
2. Binaylan – the Binaylan dance, tells the story of a hen, the hen's baby, and a
hawk. In this dance, the hawk is said to control a tribe's well-being, and is killed
by hunters after attempting to harm the hen's baby.
3. Bagobo Rice Dance - The Bagobo tribe from the central uplands of Mindanao
originated this dance which imitates the movement of a hen, her banog, or baby
chicks, and a hawk. The hawk tries to capture one of the chicks and is killed by
the hunters
1. Tinikling - take two long bamboo sticks rapidly and in rhythm, clap sticks for
dancers to artistically and daringly try to avoid getting their feet caught between
them.
2. Singkil - In this dance, there are four bamboo sticks arranged in a tic-tac-toe pattern
in which the dancers exploit every position of these clashing sticks. It is identifiable
with the use of umbrellas and silk clothing.
