TRAINING OF NIGERIANS AS CommerciaL PILots
The Federal Governmentinvites applications from
suitably qualified young men to train as commercial
pilots:and to take their place in Nigeria’s developing
civil aviation. To be eligible for training underthis
scheme, candidates must be aged between 17 and
25 years, and hold the West African School Certifi-
cate (or equivalent), with credits in English Language
and Mathematics; candidates with higher educa-
tional qualifications will receive preference.

2. An initial training course of about six months’
duration will be held at the Flying School near
Lagos, during which successful candidates will be
paid a salary or allowances of £28 per month and
provided with uniform and flying clothing. They’
will however, have to make their own arrangements
for board and lodging. * all the necessary information.
3. On completion of the initial training course,
successful candidates may qualify for the Private
Pilot’s Licence, and the more outstanding pupils
will be eligible for selection for further training in
the United Kingdom,the successful completion of
which would make them eligible for the Commercial
Pilot’s Licence. During this advanced training
the Federal Government’s Scholarship rates will be
paid, together with all the usual allowances. |
4, Successful candidates returning to Nigeria
with Commercial Licences may be offered appoint-
ment with Nigeria Airways, but there may also be
opportunities for employment in the Northern
Region Communications Flight, and with Nigerian
non-scheduled operators. Holders of Commercial
_ Licences appointed to Nigeria Airways would begin
their careers as Second Officers, and with experience,
would be required to gain higher qualifications,
making them eligible for promotion, ultimately
to the responsibility of having their own command.
Somewhat similar arrangements would apply to
those taking up other air crew appointments.
5. Candidates holding the requisite educational
qualifications should. apply immediately by letter,
‘addressed to the Secretary, Scholarship Board,
Federal Ministry of Education, Lagos, giving the
following personal information only :—

(iv) Schools attended
(v) Educational qualifications
(vi) Present employment
(vii) A statement as to whether or not the can-
didate will be free to undergo aptitude testing
which will last approximately 3 to 4 weeks, and if
selected, to start initial training about 1st May,

qualified. will be sent a formal application form,
together with instructions about undergoing medical

EXPORTS FROM NIGERIA
The Crown Agents are experiencing great diff-
culties in clearing outward shipments of stores,
despatched to the United Kingdom forrepairs, etc.,
and sent through the Government Coastal Agency,
because the consignors concerned do not supply

the Government Coastal Agency of Nigeria, 1958,
the following information also should be supplied :-—
(a) Precise details of the contents of packages,
and if more than one package, how the goods
are distributed.
(5) Reason for return, i.e., repair, incorrect
supply, or any other reason.
(c) Country of origin when known. This is
important now that so many goods are obtained
outside the United Kingdom.
(d) Indent numbers of reference of depart-
mental correspondence to the Crown Agents.
3. For the benefit of those Ministry/Departments
which are not in possession of the Government
Coastal Agency Handbook, the information at
Chapter 10 (Exports for Nigeria), paragraphs 33-36
is given hereunder :—.
“Departments wishing to despatch abroad
items for repair or for other purposes should see
they are carefully packed to withstand the possi-
bity of rough handling en route and mark the
packages clearly with the name and address
of the ultimate destination. 3
The packages should be delivered to the Govern-
ment Coastal Agent at Apapa or consigned to the
Coastal Agent at the Lagos Terminus (Iddo) if
sent by rail. The number of the waybill and date
of despatch should he telegraphed to “‘Coastagent
Apapa” and the waybill forwarded to the Coastal
Agent at Apapa by the quickest means, together
with a letter giving full instructions as to disposal
of the packages, their value and details of the
contents.
Goods which are the subject ‘of indents on
Crown Agents (e.g., samples) or for repair through
correspondence with Crown Agents will be
consigned to them to handle in the United King-
dom.. Other goods will be consigned to the
addressee to whom will be sent the Bills of
Lading and. advices,
The Coastal Agent also despatches by sea
route stores. for other Government Departments
in Nigeria. Such despatches are dealt with in
the same manner as those mentioned above”.

Qualifications-—Cadidates for pensionable appoint-
ment must not be over 40 years of age and
should. have served a recognised apprenticeship of
at least five years in one of the building trades,
followed, by at least five years post-apprenticeship
experience, and preferably should hold a City and
Guilds Diploma in an appropriate subject. Previous
experience in instructing staff in one of the building
trades will be an advantage. Ability to control
prison labour is essential.
Duties—Selected candidates will be responsible
for the organisation and supervision of building
operations by the Prisons Department (i.e., new
prison buildings and staff quarters, prison camps
and extensions to. existing prisons). They will also
be responsible for the training of junior staff and
pri oners employed on building sites and in prison
workshops.
Conditions of service-—~The post is pensionable

on contract terms.
