Endowment Lecture on Constitutional Governance &
Dr. K C Ramamurthy Public Policy from an Indian Perspective was
Endowment Lecture successfully organised by the CMRU School of Legal
on Constitutional studies on 23rd May, 2023 at its OMBR Campus. The
Governance & Public distinguished chief guest for the event was Dr. R.
Policy from an Venkataramani, Ld. Attorney General for India. The
Indian Perspective event was graced by Dr. Sabitha Ramamurthy,
Chancellor at CMR University and Shri KR Jayadeep,
Pro Chancellor of CMR University.
The “Dr. K C Ramamurthy Endowment Lecture”
fostered a deep understanding and ensued insightful
discussions on constitutional governance and public
policy within the Indian context. Dr. R.
Venkataramani, Ld. Attorney General for India,
delivered an enlightening and thought-provoking
lecture on constitutional governance and public policy
from an Indian perspective. Drawing upon his vast
expertise and experience in the legal field, Dr.
Venkataramani shed light on the significance of
looking at our Constitution from a Dharmic
perspective and how it adds shape to legislation and
public policy.

visionary educationist and former Member of
Parliament Rajya Sabha, has dedicated his life to public
service and his contributions to the development of the

Contemporary India is awakened to the need to interpret
national security in a comprehensive manner, rather than in
a conventional military sense. The realization of the
significant role that intangible security factors play is

inspiring responses to national challenges through multi-
sectoral, inter-sectoral, and pan-sectoral strategic
National Policy approaches. This has resulted in the inclusion of several new
stakeholders into the national security debate. Consequently,

Contemporary Studies, Bangalore convened a national level
thought colloquium to examine policy positions and
relevant reforms on national security issues. The discussion
proved highly successful in opening a channel of productive
communication between academia and government that
facilitates national security recommendations by the
academia to the relevant authorities.
Amongst a host of highly experienced resource persons, Air
Chief Marshal Fali H Major (Rtd.) 21st Chief of the Air Staff
of the Indian Air Force, Lieutenant General Philip Campose
(Rtd.) 35th Vice Chief of the Indian Army, Shri. Ashit
Mohan Prasad, IPS (Rtd.) Former Director General of Police
and Dr. Aditya Sondhi, Senior Advocate, Former Additional
Advocate General were the panelists.

Emerging Trends in Kolkata delivered the Inaugural Address on, “Atmanibhar
International Trade Bharat Abhiyan and International Trade Law”.

CMR University School of Legal Studies jointly
organised a training session on Competition Law on
13.04.2023 along with the Competition Commission of
India. Shri K P Anand, Joint Director (Law),
Competition Commission of India addressed the students
and faculties of the School of Legal Studies on a general
overview of Competition Law in India. Shri K P Anand
joined the Commission in February 2014 as Deputy

01.01.2021 and has been a Case Handling Officer
Training Session on (CHO). Sir was also enrolled as an Advocate in the Tamil
Nadu Bar Council in September 2008 and was practising
Competition Law before the Madras High Court until January 2014.
During his session, Shri K P Anand gave an overview of
the objectives of the Competition Act, 2002, the
structure of Competition Commission of India, its
functions and the provisions relating to it. After the
session, Shri K P Anand Sir also addressed the questions
raised by the students. Through this insightful session
Mr. Anand provided a birds eye view of the different
aspects of Competition Law with practical examples
which gave the students first hand knowledge and in
depth understanding about the subject.

On 4th March, 2023, a National seminar was held to
discuss the protection of gender identity and the LGBTQ+
community by Centre for Gender Justice and Law, School
of Legal Studies, CMR University.
4TH MARCH, 2023 The inaugural address was given by Prof. (Dr.) Nagaratna
Associate Professor of Law, NLSIU, Bengaluru. She
Seminar on expounded on the difference between Gender and Sex and
Protecting Gender also highlighted the important fundamental and human
Identity and rights related to Gender Justice in our Constitution and
various International Documents. Further, we moved on
LGBTQ+ Community
with Presidential address by Prof. (Dr.) H B Raghavendra,
Vice Chancellor, CMR University. He stressed on the
importance of conducting such seminars for creating
awareness in the society.
Following the session Dr. Akkai Padmashali & Ms. Najma
Farooqi, KSPS spoke on Gender Equality and Women
Empowerment. The final session was conducted by Smt.
Susheela Sarathy, Squadron Leader Delshad Master & Adv.
James Arun. The seminar aimed to bring together experts,
policymakers and stakeholders to share their views on
issues faced by the LGBTQ+ community, including
discrimination and harassment. The speakers highlighted
the need to create a safe and inclusive environment for all
individuals irrespective of their gender identity. They also
discussed various legal frameworks, policies and initiatives
that can be implemented to protect the rights of the
LGBTQ+ community. The seminar concluded with a call
to action for all stakeholders to work towards creating a
more equitable and just society for everyone.

The CMR University School of Legal Studies, Legal
Services Clinic and the Center for Alternative Dispute
Resolution, successfully organized a One-Day Certificate
Course on "Journey to Judgeship." This event occurred on
April 22, 2023, from 10:30 AM to 4:30 PM at CMR
University's AV Hall.
The program commenced with a warm welcome address

from Dean Prof. (Dr.) T.R. Subramanya, followed by
Journey To introductions to the esteemed guests of honor: Hon’ble
Judgeship Justice B.M. Shyam Prasad and Hon’ble Justice Suraj
Govindraj, both serving as Judges in the High Court of
Karnataka.
The course's focal point was to offer expert insights into
the judiciary as a promising career avenue for students. It
aimed to guide law students in planning their academic
journey, illuminating the skills, qualifications, benefits, and
challenges associated with the path to judgeship.Overall,
the event facilitated a platform for students to gather
profound perspectives on pursuing a judicial career,
enriching their understanding through expert guidance.

to have Lt. Gen. C.A Krishnan provide a guest lecture on
the topic "Indian Armed Forces & The Military Justice
System in India : An Overview". Lt. Gen. Krishnan
2ND MAY, 2023 PVSM, UYSM, AVSM (Retd.) has a distinguished career
in the Armed forces rising to the rank of Former Deputy
Indian Armed Forces Chief of Army and former member Armed Forces
& The Military Tribunal.
Justice System in In his lecture, he guided the students regarding the
India: An Overview various opportunities available to them in public services.
He emphasized upon the need for young graduates to
give back to their nation and offered pathways for law
graduates in the Army.
Further, he addressed the doubts and concerns of those
present about admission criteria and entry. All in all, it
was an deeply enriching session that opened up new
possibilities for the students.

The lecture on the topic ‘Career Opportunities in Law and
Making a Mark’ was organized and conducted by CMR
University School of Legal Studies, Legal Services Clinic.

Career Hon'ble Mr. Justice Pradeep Singh Yerur is a Judge at the
Opportunities in Law Hon'ble High Court of Karnataka, India, who was

Court of Karnataka on November 15, 2019. Prior to his
appointment as a Judge, he had practiced law for over 26
years and was a senior advocate at the High Court of
Karnataka.
The speaker gave an idea of what were the various career
opportunities available to law students back in his early
career days and now, by sharing various incidents from his
own experience as a practicing advocate and as a Judge.
He further went on to explain what are the various career
opportunities available to law graduates, such as law
practice, public service, judicial careers, legal academia,
legal writing, international organizations, mediation and
arbitration and JAG officer.

The panel discussion was held on the topic of Youngsters
and Tobacco Identity. The discussion was moderated by
Mr. S.J. Chander, co-founder of Consortium for Tobacco-
Free Karnataka. There were three panelists from different
fields: Dr. Shobha G, Director of School of Home Science
at Maharani Cluster University, Dr. K. Pushpanjali,
Professor and Head of Faculty at Dental Science, MS
Ramaiah University, and Dr. S.U. Sahaya Raj, Additional

Specialist at NIMHANS. The discussion centered around
Panel Discussion- the mental and physical impacts of tobacco and the
Youngsters' Identity importance of creating awareness among the youth.
with Smoking Mr. Chander introduced the topic and highlighted the
importance of addressing the issue of tobacco use among
youngsters'. Dr. Shobha G shared that tobacco use can
negatively impact self-esteem and self-worth and can lead
to addiction and substance abuse disorders. Dr. K.
Pushpanjali highlighted that tobacco use can lead to
various oral health problems such as gum disease, tooth
decay, and oral cancer. Dr. S.U. Sahaya Raj shared her
insights about how tobacco use can lead to anxiety,
depression and other mental health problems.
The panelists emphasized the importance of creating
awareness about the dangers of tobacco use and promoting
healthy habits among youngsters'. The interactive session
helped in understanding the importance of early detection
and prevention of health problems caused by tobacco use
among youngsters'.

The guest lecture was delivered by Shri. V. Sudhish Pai, a
senior Advocate, a distinguished lawyer, a jurist and an
acclaimed author specializing in Constitutional law and
Administrative law.
He began by giving a brief introduction of how the
judiciary functioned during the ancient times. He further
delved into the importance of an independent and a free
judiciary. However, he also emphasized the fact that at the
same time the Judges must also exercise utmost caution
and care in delivering judgments. He explained how in
ancient times the judges used to stay aloof and isolated
from the society in order to be free from biases. However,
now the scenario has changed drastically. At present, the

emphasized that this change is a positive one because it is

not necessary for the judges to stay aloof and deliver

He also explained some of the landmark cases and legal
principles like the basic structure doctrine propounded in
the Kesavananda Bharati Case. He also threw light on the
appointment of judges to other government jobs or posts
after retirement. He explained that there needs to be a
minimum cooling period before the judges join other
positions in the government.
Thus, the guest lecture was extremely informative for the
students of Constitutional law in developing a sense of
understanding on the true meaning of independence of
judiciary. This event proved to be a great success in
helping the students to get an opportunity to also interact
with one of the legal stalwarts in the field of Constitutional
Law.

16TH FEBRUARY, 2023 Mr. Praveen Bhargav is a trustee at Wildlife First and a
former member of National Board for Wildlife which is

chaired by the Prime Minister. Through his session, he
in Conservation Laws enlightened the crowd on all conservation practices, its
causes and effects in line with the ongoing issues in the
country with respect to the current development plans that
are being carried out in the country. He also spread
awareness on how we as citizens are also one of the major
reasons behind the environmental concerns that are
grappling with the conservation practices, spanning from
the usage of non-disposable plastics to excessive usage of
fossil fuels. He also encouraged all the students through his
interactive session on the steps that could be taken for the
betterment of the country. Through his thought-
provoking lecture he piqued the interest of several
students, as a result of which, at the end of the session,
several questions were posed to him by the students on the
ongoing lacunae and issues with respect to the
environmental policies on conservation laws in our
country, which were addressed extremely patiently by
him.

The Center for Environment Studies: Law and Policy
hosted a guest lecture on 'Human Rights and
Environment', featuring Dr. Sairam Bhat as the Guest
Speaker. Dr. Bhat's interactive approach engaged
attendees as he discussed human-wildlife interaction,
citing the Salman Khan Black Buck case. He delved into

the legal implications of negligence using the Bhopal Gas
Human Rights and Tragedy Case as an example, highlighting its potential for
Environment severe charges.
Notably, Dr. Bhat emphasized citizens' role in addressing
environmental crimes, with the state carrying the burden
of proof. He concluded by detailing the intricacies of
evidencing environmental crimes. The lecture
underscored the intricate connection between human
rights and the environment, leaving attendees with a
heightened understanding of this crucial interface.

The lecture on Pakistan's Civil- Military Relations: Co-
existence to Confrontation, delivered by Prof. (Dr.)
Bidanda Chengappa, a defence analyst and journalist, with
superabundant knowledge and experience in International
Affairs and National Security; was yet another parley,
involving comprehensive discussions on the state of
Military and governance in India's neighboring state of
Pakistan. It highlighted and reiterated the fact that a book
can never be judged by its cover.
The talk commenced with the political status of the
country after decades of nationhood, with over 35 years of
Military rule. The governmental and political history of

the country was outlined, involving wars and invasion and
the hybrid regime of Military rule and democratically
Pakistan's Civil -
elected government. Military bureaucracy and the
Military Relations: military's dependence on Civil Services was scrutinized,
with the perpetual presence of the Civil Services.
Co-existence to The discussion revolved around the roots of the occasional
Confrontation chaos in the country, post which the Civil military
relations were outlined, to be the defining feature of the
country's political landscape. Further, the failure of
democracy and the Civil service affinity for military rule
was pondered upon. Military dictatorship in Pakistan was
highlighted, thereby pointing out the tactics employed in
thwarting the democratic rule. The country's political
landscape was discussed as a consequence of which severe
political instability was witnessed. Fast forward to 2023,
the contemporary democracy involved greater public
activism with significant involvement of the media,
outlining the different policies towards India and other
neighbors. Nevertheless, the country has a long way to go
in terms of a stable economy and government, wherein the
leaders are not at war but adopt a harmonious
environment.

The CMRU-KSCST IP cell organized a webinar on 9th
May, 2023. The webinar was delivered on the topic
‘Demystifying Author in Evolving Copyright Law’. The
chief guest for the webinar was Prof. Anirban Mazumdar
who earned his LL.B. from Burdwan University. LL.M.
from National Law School of India University, Bangalore,
and M.Phil from National University of Juridical Sciences,
Calcutta and Ph.D. from National University of Juridical
Sciences, Calcutta.
Commencing with the intricate realm of AI-generated
projects, the speaker addressed issues of authorship and
credit attribution between AI and human contributors.
The essence of identifying an author and understanding
their role was expounded. Historical underpinnings were

underscoring the nascent development of authors' rights

in Evolving Copyright Delving into the nuances of UK legislations, Prof.
Law Mazumdar elucidated the process of conceiving and
tangibly expressing creative content. The concept of joint
authorship was illuminated through cases like
Najamahatulla v. Oriel Nauman and Walter v. Len,
highlighting individual roles within collaborative efforts.
The webinar extended to contemplate the intriguing
perspective of reporters as authors. Prof. Mazumdar
clarified that while a person's brilliant idea holds merit, the
act of mere communication doesn't equate to ownership of
the final work. The discourse culminated by addressing
computer-generated work as defined by Section 178,
CDPA, followed by an overview of recent copyright-
related cases.
In summary, the webinar encapsulated the evolving
landscape of copyright law, navigated adeptly by Prof.
Anirban Mazumdar. Attendees gained invaluable insights
into the nuanced dimensions of authorship, legal
perspectives, and contemporary cases shaping the realm of
copyright.

On 14th February,2023 as part of the Guest Lecture Series,
a comprehensive lecture on the subject of "Data Protection
in a Digital World." was delivered by Mr. Shreekanth
Katti. Commencing with an introduction to the paradigm
shift from manual to digital intervention, he emphasized
the imperative of understanding the digital landscape,
where data traverses international boundaries
unrestrictedly. He gave the history of the evolution of
data by talking about the Arthasastra, Islamic culture,
Article 21 of the Constitution of India followed by his
elucidation of the K.S Puttaswamy v. Union of India case.
He highlighted that after the year 2000 we have entered
the digital world.
Firstly, talking about the most important aspect being the
internet without which the digital world cannot survive,

the speaker mentioned the unavailability of internet to
Data Protection in a them but today its surplus, he said that the internet is a part
Digital World of physics as it is a wavelength of which the government
has complete control.
He spoke about the evolution of data privacy in today’s
world, the different platforms of digitalisation such as the
big data, cloud, internet of things etc platforms where the
data is stored. He further spoke of the digital privacy laws
such as the IT Amendment Act 2008 which was the first to
introduce a provision of an electronic data into the ambit
of law, SPDT Act of 2011 where rules were enforced
under the Act, The RBI Localization Act which listed the
private data which was required for the protection of
personal data and mandated to ensure protective data. Sir
Katti spoke on the principles in data privacy worldwide
and the challenges like nature, consent collection
limitation, purpose limitation, security, transparency,
access and correction, accountability etc. He concluded his
session by pointing out the difference between business
and privacy.

its activity to allied areas connected closely to
the art of writing. The club does not intend to
