LOAD FREQUENCY CONTROL OF SINGLE AREA AND TWO AREA SYSTEMS-TIE LINE
BIAS CONTROL-AUTOMATIC VOLTAGE REGULATOR AND ITS DYNAMICS

Q.1) Two generating units rated 300 MW and 400 MW have governor speed regulation of 6%
and 4% respectively from no load to full load. Both the generating units are operating in parallel
to share a load of 600 MW. Assuming free governor action, the load shared by the larger unit
is _______ MW.

Sol.1)
Assume No – load speed regulations are equal

From similar triangles method

Given that P1 + P2 = 600MW

150x = 600
x=4
∴The load supplied by largest machine is P2 = 100 x 4 = 400MW (Ans)
Q.2) Two 200 MVA alternators operate in parallel. The frequency drops in first machine from
50 Hz at no load to 48 Hz at full load, where as in case of other machine, the frequency drops
from 50 Hz to 47 Hz under the same conditions. If the two machines have to share a total load
of 300 MW, then the maximum load at unity p.f. which can be delivered by the two machines
without overloading any of them is
Sol)

New frequency of operation of 200 MW alternator,

f1 =50− P1

3
and f2 =50− P2
200

Total load, P1+P2 = 300MW ...(i)

Units operated in parallel so,

f1 = f2 = f

3
50− P2 = 50− P1
200

2P1−3P2=0 ......(ii)

From equations (i) and (ii), we get

P1=180MW

P2=120MW
Machine (i) which has better speed regulation will be loaded first to its full load rating, so it will
operate on maximum load of 200 MW

2P1−3P2=0 ... (iii)

2×200−3P2=0

P2=400/3=133.33MW

Total power delivered by two machine without overloading

P1+P2 = 200+133.33 = 333.33MW (Ans)

Q.3) A 250-MW, 60-Hz turbine generator set has a speed regulation of 5 percent based on its
own rating. The generator frequency decreases from 60 Hz to a steady state value of 59.7Hz.
Determine the increase in the turbine power output.
Sol) The change in the angular frequency is
.
Δω= =-0.005pu

The change in the turbine power output is

−1 −1
ΔPg=
𝑅 Δω= 0.05 (-0.005) = 0.10pu
= 25MW (Ans)
