Mud density is calculated by adding the

masses of the components of the cement
slurry and dividing this sum by the sum of the
absolute volumes of these components. In
other words, to determine slurry density, the
total mass of cement, water and additives
must be divided by their total volume:

where m – weight, V - volume.

Cement slurry yield is the volume of slurry

obtained from a unit mass of cement,
including all additives and mixing water. Since
the mass of cement is often expressed in
sacks, cement slurry yield in practice is usually
understood as the parameter showing how
much cement slurry can be obtained from one
sack of cement with all additives and mixing
water taken into account. The unit of measure
is ft3/sk. Let us consider an example of
calculating the density and yield value of a
Class G cement. According to the data given in
Table the mixing water is 44 % by weight of
dry cement.

Main grades of cements according to the API classification

For ease of calculation, it is convenient to

construct the table below.

1. The mixing water mass is 44% BWOC

94 lbm × 0.44 = 41.36 lbm

The cement slurry yield (Y) is usually expressed

in ft3/sk, in fact the slurry yield expressed in
gallons has already been found (i.e. 8.54 gal)
and it is only necessary to convert this value

into ft3/sk. Knowing that, in 1 ft3=7.48 gal, we

find the solution yield expressed in ft3/sk.

The calculation procedure is exactly the same

as for other additives. As an example, let's
consider a cement slurry of the following
composition:

1. Calculate the masses of all the components

of the mixture

Mix water (BWOC)

94 lbm × 0.44 = 41.36 lbm

Silica flour (BWOC)

94 lbm × 0.3= 28.2 lbm

Fluid loss additive (BWOC)

94 lbm × 0.01= 0.94 lbm

Liquid dispersant

2. Put the results into a table

Note: Specific volume values are taken from

technical handbooks.

The volume of silica flour is determined by

multiplying the mass and absolute volume

3. Determine the yield and density of the

slurry
