Preface
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a confluence of basic sciences,
clinical dentistry and surgery, and hence requires the knowledge
and skills to diagnose, manage and treat patients with basic oral
surgical problems. An undergraduate dental student should have an
understanding of the broader aspect of oral and maxillofacial
surgery and oral implantology, and should be familiar with the
management of major oral surgical problems and the principles
involved in the in-patient management. An undergraduate student
is also expected to be familiar with the ethical and moral issues
pertaining to patient care and should have the skills to examine any
patient with an oral surgical problem in an orderly manner
following aseptic techniques. By the end of 4 years training, student
should be competent in extraction of the teeth and carry out minor
oral surgical procedures under local or general anaesthesia,
preventing and managing the common complications that arise
during and after minor oral surgery, and provide primary care and
manage medical emergencies in the dental office.
This book is an a empt to take students to a digital world where
in addition to the printed book with flowcharts, clinical pictures and
MCQs, there are digital links to video lectures, surgeries and power
point presentations, which can be easily accessed on any smart
phone, to give a be er understanding of the topic. The book also
includes additional chapters, which are not included in the textbooks
currently but are required to know for an undergraduate student
such as Evidence-based Maxillofacial Surgery, Recent Advancements
in this field and Research methodologies.
I hope this book will be of great use and help in learning and
understanding the fundamental of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
