Summary of Conditionals

Zero Conditional
If + present simple, ... present simple

Example: If you heat water, it boils.

Use: General truths or laws of nature.

First Conditional
If + present simple, ... will + base verb

Example: If it rains, we will cancel the trip.

Use: Real future situations that are likely to happen.

Second Conditional
If + past simple, ... would + base verb

Example: If I won the lottery, I would travel the world.

Use: Hypothetical situations in the present or future.

Third Conditional
If + past perfect, ... would have + past participle

Example: If she had studied, she would have passed the exam.

Use: Hypothetical situations in the past.

Mixed Conditional
If + past perfect, ... would + base verb

Example: If he had taken the job, he would be living in Paris now.

Use: Hypothetical past action affecting the present.
