Do all substances always interact with each other the same way?
In the previous demo, you saw that the “hot sauce” was not causing a chemical reaction with the water or
milk. Therefore, we know that it is not a chemical reaction that causing the capsaicin molecule to “disappear.”
So, what is it? Do all substances always interact with each other the same way? What about a physical
change? Could that be what is causing the capsaicin to go away?

Part 1: DEMO
Look at the demo video using the following substances. Label each as ionic compounds or molecular and fill in
the data table.

Part 2: LAB
You will be given various substances. These substances do not “chemically react” but they interact with each
other. You should combine each of the substances in a spot plate and make observations about what you see.

PURE SUBSTANCES: MIXTURES:

Water Vegetable Oil (oil)
Hexane (Hex) Food Coloring
