Instructions. Solve for the following problem. Write your solution in a clean long bond paper (8.5" x 13"). Write
legibly. Box your final answer. No solution is considered wrong.

1.) A car travels 20km due north and then 35 km in a direction

60 deg W of N as shown in the figure. A.) Find the
magnitude and direction of the car’s resultant displacement.
(10 pts.)
B.) Supposed the trip were taken with two vectors in reverse
order: 35km at 60 deg Wof N first then 20km due north.
What would be the magnitude and the direction of the
resultant vector? (10 pts.)

2.) A hiker begins a trip by first walking 25.0 km southeast from her car. She stops and sets up her tent for the
night. On the second day, she walks 40.0km in a direction 60 deg north of east, at which point she
discovers a forest ranger’s tower. (20 pts.)
a. Determine the components of the hiker’s displacement for each day.
b. Determine the components of the hiker’s resultant displacement R for the trip.

3.) Given the following data of a closed traverse. Determine the resultant/ displacement. (20 pts.)

Point Distance (m) Direction Angle (in deg)

A-B 137 N of W 48
B-C 83.8 N of W 15
C-D 124.4 N of W 59
D-E 149.8 N of E 54
E-F 111.7 S of E 25
F-G 266.5 S of E 77
G-A 52 S of W 69

4.) Find the resultant and the direction of the given vector using parallelogram method:
F1: 60N, 36˚ N of W
F2: 80 N , 42˚ N of E (20 pts.)

5.) An object is acted on by two forces 20 N each. The angle between the forces is 120˚. What will be the
magnitude and direction of the resultant force? (20 pts.)
