DESIGN
PAST: Simple hull shapes mimicking natural forms are created through intuition. Due to
Trial and error lead to a better understanding of water displacement and stability. Oar
placement and hull design become more sophisticated.
PRESENT: Calculations and engineering principles begin to influence ship design for
optimal performance. 3D models and digital simulations revolutionize ship design, allowing
for testing and optimization before construction.
FUTURE: AI optimizes design for performance, efficiency, and material and manufacturing
limitations.
CONSTRUCTION
PAST: Shipyards become organized with specialized teams for tasks like carpentry,
sailmaking, rigging, and caulking. Integration of different components requires skilled
coordination. The shift from wood to steel necessitates new techniques. Steam-powered
cranes are introduced to handle massive steel plates.
PRESENT: Electric welding replaces riveting, impacting labor needs. Standardized sections
allow for faster assembly. Robotic welding improves efficiency and consistency.
Communication advancements like fax machines facilitate collaboration with remote
teams. Also, Plasma cutters with CAD guidance increase cutting accuracy and reduce
waste.
TECHNOLOGY
PAST: Iron tools represent a further advancement in material science. Basic pulleys and
levers might be used for rudimentary lifting tasks. Steam engines represent a major
technological leap, revolutionizing propulsion. Steel production and steam-powered cranes
are further advancements.
