CHEMPRACTICAL 1
1. In this experiment, you are required to determine the molarity of sodium hydroxide, NaOH
solution by titrating with nitric acid, HNO3.
You are provided with:
1. Sodium hydroxide, NaOH solution labeled R1
2. 0.2 mol dm-3 of nitric acid, HNO3 labeled R2
3. Phenolphthalein indicator

Procedure:

1. Pipette 25.0 cm3 of R1 solution and transfer into a conical flask.

2. Add three drops of phenolphthalein into the solution in the conical flask.
3. Fill a burette with R2 solution and record the initial burette reading.
4. Carry out the titration by adding R2 solution into R1 solution until the end point of
titration.
5. Record the final burette reading.
6. Repeat the steps 1 to 5 for another two times.

(a) Record the burette readings and volume of R2 solution in the table below.

2 You have to carry out an experiment to investigate the effect of different concentration of
sodium thiosulphate solution on the rate of reaction.

Carry out the experiment by following the steps below:

1. Measure 40 cm3 of 0.2 mol dm-3 sodium thiosulphate solution, Na2S2O3 and pour into
a conical flask for Set I.
2. Place the conical flask onto a piece of paper marked with ‘X’.
3. Measure 5 cm3 of distilled water and add into conical flask containing with
2 mol dm-3 sodium thiosulphate solution, Na2S2O3.
4. Measure 5 cm3 of 1.0 mol dm-3 acid Z and pour it into the conical flask quickly and
carefully. Start the stopwatch immediately.
5. Swirl the conical flask slowly.
6. Observe the ‘X’ mark vertically from the mouth of conical flask and stop the
stopwatch as soon as ‘X’ mark disappear from sight.
7. Record the time taken and tabulate in Table 1.
8. Repeat steps 1 to 7 by using different volume of sodium thiosulphate solution and
distilled water for Set II and Set III as shown in Table 1.

Tick (/) at the space provided.
