 This section takes you deeper into the working parts of astrology and will ground your

I’ll introduce hemispheres and quadrants - a simple method for interpreting groups of
planets on a chart and the personality types they represent at a glance.

We’ll finish this section by exploring house systems. We’ll compare equal house,
Koch and Placidus. We’ll look at how they work and why they’re different, and most
importantly why you may consider using one house system over another.

 2-1 DC, MC & IC
It’s helpful to consider the quadrant on
the natal chart as seasons, with the first
quadrant representing Spring. It also
represents childhood - the first stage
of life. We become aware of ourselves,
our immediate environment and learn
the necessary tools that allow us to
communicate our needs.
WORKING WITH THE DC, MC & IC
The ruling sign tell us how we’ll
experience each the angles of the
chart. They give us critical information
about the defining qualities and lessons
and it’s often best to treat each pair
as an opposite and a search for inner
completeness. If your Ascendant is Aries
- confident, driven, competitive and me-
focused your Descendant is Libra, and
this hints at an attraction to partners who
have your opposite qualities - diplomatic,
compromising and more you focused.
Such a person can teach you how to love
in the ways you don’t know how - whether

you ultimately appreciate that love is up
to you and probably reflects where you
are on your journey. A Leo ascendant
- with their love of the grandiose and
the adoration of their audience, is both
intrigued and maddened by Aquarius who
don’t seem to give them a second look.
They admire how Aquarius follow the
best of their own drum whether it wins
approval and adoration from others or
not.
A Taurus Nadir lives firmly in the realm of
the senses and physical sensations. Their
inner perspective of the world is driven by
simple pleasures, transactional experienc-
es that often result in material outcomes.
Slowly, slowly catches the monkey and
they believe in a world that allows them
to have their cake and eat it too. Home
is a place of peace and beauty, filled with
wonderful scents and things that are lux-
urious to touch and they understand that
it takes a healthy amount of conceit to
know that you look this good.

By contrast, their Scorpio mid-heaven
requires them to dig deeper than ever
before to make their mark on this world.
Their Taurean nature already knows
what it desires and they’re willing to go
to any length to get it. They realise that
they’re going to need to pick up the pace
if their ambitions are to be realised -
the transition from that methodical and
steady bull can be strenuous and the
medicine they require will take them
out of form and into spirit. It’ll take time
until they can maintain a new pace and
they’ll need to learn how to hide their
soft underbelly. They’ll also need to step
out of that comfort zone that they settle
into far too easily and that they’re going
to need to learn how to play hardball - to
use poison instead of brute force. Their
early goals are built out of anger and they
find themselves constantly frustrated by
their limitations until they realise that the
journey is internal and transformational.
Their later goals are built on passion the
quality of the people they choose to work
with.

THE DESCENDANT occupies the cusp
between the sixth and seventh houses -
the quadrant that represents adulthood and
group relations - the Autumn of the natal
chart.

2-2 HEMISPHERES & QUADRANTS
Now that we have a feeling for the lay of
the land, let’s start making some divisions
in the chart by recognizing HEMISPHERES
AND QUADRANTS. By looking at where
planets cluster or group on a chart, we
can make personality observations. We
do this by looking at hemispheres and
quadrants - regions of the chart that
shape our sense of self, our awareness of
others and how we see our place in the
greater scheme of things, shaped by the
rulership and the signs that natively rule
these houses.
HEMISPHERES

3-0 INTERPRETATION POINTS We’ll begin with lunar nodes - points on the chart that reflect the highest and lowest
points of the Moon’s orbit, a tale of spiritual purpose and soul direction in this lifetime,
and karmic debts from past lifetimes that make their way into the present.

We’ll look at the major asteroids Ceres, Pallas, Juno, Vesta and will also include Hygeia,
and you’ll learn how to interpret them in the chart.

We’ll take a deeper look at the asteroid Chiron - known as the wounded healer and a
point of importance for those working through lingering or hidden pain.

We’ll introduce calculated points starting with the Part of Fortune. We’ll also look at
White Moon Selena and Black Moon Lilith.

We’ll wrap this section up with minor aspects - new circuitry to bind our planets

 The nodes in astrology are the two orbital points
the moon occupies as it orbits the Earth. There
is a North node, which tracks the moon as it
moves to it’s peak in the Northern hemisphere
and we call this the North or Ascending node.
The Southern node tracks the peak of the moon’s
orbit in the southern hemisphere.
As a result, the nodes occupy opposing signs on
the chart so if your north node is in Leo, your
southern node will fall in Aquarius.
These extreme points are where the full moon
eclipses occur and the solar eclipse when the
moon is new.
In soul centered astrology the North node reflects
the spiritual purpose of the current life - the
lessons we’ve come here to learn.
The nodes move between signs every 18 months
and people born within the same lunar node
group can feel like ‘your people’. If you have a
child when aged 18-19 or 36-37, your child will
have the same nodes as you while a partner
who ten years older or younger than you will
have opposing nodes. And this can be a good
thing, giving a sense of completeness when your
energies combine.
The Kabbalah and Vedic astrology also recognise
the nodes. The Kabbalah calls the north node
tikkun which translates to correction to recognise
the adjustments your soul wants you to make in
the current incarnation. Vedic astrology calls the
north node Rahu - the head, and Ketu - the tail,
which make up the extreme points of the dragon
and these reflect the karmic extremes of the
present life.
SOUTH NODE
The south node represents the karma we’ve
brought into this life from past lives. It can reflect

the edges of our comfort zone and the habits
we retreat into when life becomes challenging.
There’s also a sense of deja vu to be found in
the south node. Things we inexplicably know or
people who seem so familiar to us even though
we’re only meeting them for the first time.
It’s also been there done that energy and
represents previous life experiences that have run
their course. They benefit us in that they provide
experience and skills, but the lessons associated
with this energy have run their course and it’s
time to move on.
The sign that the south node is in tells us
volumes about who we might have been in a
past life - with emphasis on wrongs we may
have committed or negative traits we may have
indulged. We look at the negatives of the sign
to find clues about the karma we may have
carried into this life - that Leonine ego, that
Taurean hedonism or that unbridled Capricornian
ruthlessness and for many of us this energy is in
stark contrast to the energy we express now. For
others however, it may still be a prison in which
the soul dwells. In this life, we’re invited to refine
the higher qualities of the sign and to let those
negatives go.
The fears or insecurities of the sign the south
node is in can also play out. Fears of inadequacy,
of losing control or intimacy can manifest if these
are the fears of the sign that the south node
carries in it’s astrological DNA.
NORTH NODE
The north node is the call of the unknown. It
embraces the subconscious part of ourselves
that knows what we need or who we want
to be. Careers that imbue us with a sense of
purpose or that feeling that the pieces are all
coming together - this is north node energy. It’s
not always the easy path. If you began study

we begin to align with the north node, life often

accept and complete the challenges of the sign

For Aries, the lesson may be learning to fight for
others rather than against them - to channel that
dynamic energy to manifest and support rather
than to lay siege or obliterate. For Cancer it may
be finding balance between the pull of family and
the realisation of personal goals.
Note that North node energy can also be a
powerful antidote for a challenging south node.
The balancing and harmonizing energy of a Libra
North node can dissolve the self-centric energy of
an unrepentant Aries south node. Higher learning
and travel experiences cultivated by a Sagittarian
north node can expand and challenge the know it
all energy of a south node Gemini.
We tend to become more aware of the pull of
our north node in our late twenties or early
thirties and for many this is the time in our lives
when we begin to truly share our lives with
others. Committed relationships, children or even
commitments like mortgages or careers become
focal points in our lives and we begin to invest
our energy into plans or commitments that take
time and steadiness to manifest.

 ASTEROIDS are comparatively new to
Astrology having only been discovered in the
1800s.
Asteroids follow an orbital path between
Mars and Jupiter and are small - generally
around 5% the size of our Moon and as such
we only tend to track very strong aspects
within a 3 percent orb.
There are more than 20,000 named and
tracked asteroids but astrology tends to
focus on a big 4 - Ceres, Pallas, Juno and
Vesta, with the occasional inclusion of
Hygeia.
CERES IN ASTROLOGY
Like her name suggests, Ceres represents
how we want to be nurtured or nourished.
She represents mastery of the traditional
motherly arts and the mother-daughter
relationship. She also represents the cycles
- seasonal cycles and patterns of death and
rebirth. She also rules how we nurture or
care for ourselves and the areas of our lives
that replenish and restore us.
Well aspected, she indicates nurturing
personality, fertility and mastery of skills
associated with nurturing such as cooking

PALLAS IN ASTROLOGY

goddess Athena. She rules strong women,

Like the goddess of her name, she rules
strategy and the balancing act of wisdom
and intuition. She rules problem solving, and
may be attributed to what psychologists call

executive functions - our working memory,
mental versatility and self control.
A positively aspected Pallas brings strategy,
wisdom, a strong sense of fairness and
healthy, nurturing relationships with the
father or authority figures. Well aspected,
She also gives mental versatility and rapid
decision making ability that fuses wisdom
and intuition.
Poorly aspected, Pallas becomes the urge
to lash out without regard for consequence,
inequity and daddy issues. Imbalanced Pallas
is also bloody-minded and sees the world
in black and white. They may also excel at
small thinking or that know it all attitude we
see in a poorly aspected Mercury.
JUNO IN ASTROLOGY
Like the great Goddess Hera, Juno in
astrology is the matriarch and the vengeful
wronged woman.
Well aspected, she is dignity, strong
leadership, diplomacy and selfless
commitment to others. Her placement on
a chart gives us strong indicators of where
committed love may be found in our lives
or how our idea of committed love may
manifest. She reminds us of the duties and
responsibilities we take on when we commit
to another person and thus teaches us how
to care for and tend committed love.
Negatively aspected she is infidelity,
resentment and destructive or abusive
relationship patterns. She is the use of
children as hostages to manipulate a
spouse or the woman who maintains
appearances while enduring a toxic or
abusive relationship. She is duty over love,
maintaining appearances over the happiness
of the people involved. Power games,
jealousy and control through guilt are the
tools of an imbalanced Juno.
VESTA IN ASTROLOGY
Tasked with keeping the sacred fire burning,
vestal virgins who failed in their task were
buried alive should the fire ever go out.
Positively aspected, Vesta represents the

Known as the ‘wounded healer’ CHIRON
is an asteroid that has an erratic orbital
pattern on the chart. Chiron has deep
connections with wellness in astrology.
Chiron in mythology was a centaur -
famed for wisdom and his knowledge of
medicine. He trained Hercules, Achilles,
Jason and other great Greek heroes.
However, despite his fame as a healer
he could not heal himself and this is
an important clue in understanding the
mystery of Chiron on the chart.
Chiron represents deep wounding in
the chart. Issues of self-worth and poor
self-esteem can cloud these wounds,
making them painful to work with and
making it difficult to see just how deep
these wounds really run. Chiron on the
chart can represent a point of over-
compensation. We’re so painfully aware
of our wounding and some live their lives
believing the wound is just as visible to
other the rest of the world. We’re overly
defensive, easily hurt or have a hair
trigger temper that shoots first before
others can cause us harm. Some of us
simply withdraw or become emotionally
untouchable. The complex coping
behaviors we exhibit when protecting
these vulnerabilities allow the wound to
fester and prevent us from healing. They
become infections - infections of low
self esteem, of control issues, of violence
or addiction.
The sign that chiron manifests in points
to the particular brand of self-sabotage
a person may demonstrate and the
nature of the wound they may struggle
with. Wounds in Scorpio may stem from
abuse as a child and might create trust
issues as an adult that prevent love from
entering their lives. It may become easier
to control people than to allow them
to be who they truly are to minimize
risk. Chiron in Virgo people may feel
fundamentally unclean or imperfect.
Their behavior may become obsessive as
they try to fix themselves but the feeling
that there’s something wrong with them
never goes away and they’re convinced
their imperfection is visible to rest of

such are less likely to trigger.

However, like major aspects, they resonate
to a particular kind of wavelength when
they connect two planets, and the kinds
of relationship they represent give them
appeal to more specialized astrologers
and they may become more valuable to
specific types of astrology.
It’s rare for astrologers to use all major
aspects but more experienced astrologers
tend to have their favourites. And
remember that no aspect is minor if it’s
exact on a chart.
There are other minor aspects in astrology
the Sesquiquadrat with an orb of up to 5
degrees - and the novile, bi-quintile, the
septile, vigintile and the decile - all with a
maximum orb of 1 degree. But this passion
will kick you off and give you insight into
working with what many astrologers
consider the more major of the minor

30 degrees | 0-5 degrees The SEMI SEXTILE is a direct link
between planets in two neighbouring
signs. Adjacent signs have differing, often
opposing elements and the qualities
of the houses and signs they occupy
have divided focus. The semisextile is a
challenge to integrate clashing or alien
energies and without a uniting purpose,
these planets can have great difficulty
working together.
This challenges the native - the person
who has this aspect on their chart to step
back and take a bigger picture view of
any challenges presented by this aspect,
and it’s important to remember that the
zodiac is progressive and cohesive - that

 If you’ve taken some time to explore the new house systems from the earlier section in
4-0 ADVANCED CONCEPTS the course you’ll have already seen some deviations from the equal house model. One
of the biggest anomalies however is interception the swallowing of an entire house by
a sign or the swallowing of a sign by a house. We’ll explore interception in this section -
what it means and how we may interpret an interception and, just as importantly, ways
to explore an interception with a client as these can be land-mines to work with.

Another common experience is people not relating to the classic archetype of their sun
sign. Virgos who are outgoing and a little scruffy or mean Libras who are the alphas in
their social biome. Often the explanation is decanates - the three sub-ruling planets of
each sign. Decans offer three new spins on the way a sign expresses itself and explains
why some signs display opposing qualities. Understanding decanates allows us to fine
tune the way a planet expresses itself and offers a richer, more complete understanding
for each sign.

Signs always occupy a 30 degree spread
on the chart - 12 signs, 360 degrees. It’s
perfectly normal for a house to be ruled
by two signs once the houses move
away from the points in degrees that the
signs occupy and this is something that
happens in all house systems.
But what happens when houses increase
in size - houses larger or smaller than 30
degrees? We start to see phenomenon
emerging such as interception.
Interception occurs when a house is
completely swallowed up by a sign or
a sign is completely consumed by a
house, the result of which is three signs
appearing within a house or a house that’s
completely swallowed by a sign.
Interceptions are often repression
patterns. Repressed emotions, bottled
up anger or limitations triggered by an
inability to access the energy of a resource
that’s swallowed up by another resource.
As such, we begin to see behavioral issues
that see astrology wander more into the
realm of psychology than divination.
INTERCEPTED SIGNS
An intercepted sign is often a kind of
energy that the subject was deprived of as
part of their developmental years, and as
such, the sign often makes it’s presence
felt in the least appropriate way and
more often than not, this manifest in the
negatives of the sign playing out. These
negatives act as the pressure release for
the interception, and they act out in the
house that the sign is trapped in. The
person overcompensates in an effort to
synthesize or to manufacture this aspect
of their personality.
They can feel the energy of the sign in the
house but it’s not an energy that’s easy to
control and more often than not the pent
up frustration they feel will sabotage that
area of their life.
An intercepted Aries in the fifth house
may be too aggressive or even violent

or might have that great big alpha male
energy that is a turn off for so many
women that thwarts any chance of a
second date. They believe that Women are
theirs to take and this unhealthy outlook
creates a cycle of failure, but they many
believe it’s simply because they’re not
pushing hard enough. An intercepted
Gemini in the ninth house might be
that big mouth know it all who talks
rubbish without really offering anything
of substance in an academic setting and
this annoying trait may prevent them
from actually learning anything new or
advancing in their field if this is related
to their role. Intercepted Libras might
become martyrs, intercepted Virgos may
become relentless nags and intercepted
Aquarians may take on a creepy alien kind
of energy.
Interception can also manifest as feelings
of inadequacy. This part of your life is
missing because of something you’ve
done or because of the type of person you
are and these beliefs, often triggered early
in life, become core, defining beliefs.
The intercepted Aries child maybe always
took more than his fair share or was too
quick to anger, and the fallout of this
sees an adult too afraid to take what
is rightfully his or to express any form
of anger. An intercepted Gemini may
have never had a voice as a child and
thus grows up trying to find that voice.
Intercepted Libra may believe they do
not deserve love. Intercepted Virgo may
have been raised without boundaries
and cannot structure their own lives.
Intercepted Aquarius may lack the courage
to express their individuality and may
struggle with feelings of poor self worth.
Intercepted Houses
Intercepted houses suffocate the rulership
of that house and represent struggle,
repression or denial within that area in
the life of the subject. The easiest word to
apply to intercepted houses is difficulty.

The nature of the way the difficulty
expresses is often found in the prejudice
of the sign that has intercepted the house.
Aries with an intercepted 7th house has
difficulty creating healthy relationships
because they’re too aggressive. Pisces
finds money too restrictive or a selling
out of their god given talent in an
intercepted second house. Capricorn with
an intercepted 4th house has difficulty
starting a family because they believe that
Family is a money sink and will set their
plans back.
Like intercepted signs, we may find
there is struggle with core beliefs that
lie unchecked like land-mines below the
surface of the subject’s consciousness
that stifle growth in the area ruled by a
house. Intercepted Planets
Planets that find themselves in
intercepted signs or houses often become
hostages. Intercepted Mercury places a
gag on communication and potentially
impairs the thought process at the basest
level and promises a lifetime of challenges
for the person carrying this placement.
They may have been told they were stupid
growing up if this is in the 4th house and
they grew up with that parent with the
intercepted Aries in the fifth house. And
thus they’ve accepted that nothing that
happens in their head or comes out of
their mouth has merit or value.
An intercepted Mars lacks ambition and
drive while an intercepted Jupiter is
often a non stop story of hard luck and
trouble - a person who believe they are
born under an unlucky star and the worst
always happens. Life rolls right over the
top of an intercepted Saturn - constant
problems with authority or karmic lessons
that deprive you of that $200 every time
your life passes Go.
